Questions about LLNL

I am a long time Union skilled trade worker. I have a few acquaintances that work or have worked at the lab. I have heard some good and bad things about working at the lab. I am considering apply for a position but was looking for a few opinions of what it is like to work at the lab. Can I please ask what is a typical day like for a trades employee, pay, the benefits, and Union leadership. I would also like to know if all work falls under Davis Bacon prevailing wage guidelines. If Davis Bacon applies are there two different rates for the site in Livermore and the other site out inTracy?

For those wondering I am looking to stay in my trade but am looking for something more stable and closer to home. I currently drive over two hours each way to job sites that are all over the bay.

Sorry, but if you're looking for some informed, objective, useful input on the labs, you've come to the wrong place. This blog is overwhelmingly a forum for rants. Pro-Livermore anti-Los Alamos rants. Pro-Los Alamos anti-Livermore rants. Pro-lab anti-fed rants, and vice versa. The occasional political rants from whatever kookoo extreme position you might imagine. Oh, and rants about rants, occasionally self-referential.

I apologize for others on this site. If you can't be nice,... Yes, trades are paid at the prevailing Davis Bacon rates. Yes, site 200 (Livermore) and site 300 (Tracy) are paid at different rates as dictated by the Wage Determination as they are in different counties. A great deal of the employment for the trades is currently subcontracted through Akima Construction.

Ain't that the sad truth. Angry, cynical, delusional, professional has been's, morbidly curious, looking for cheap entertainment, leftist-rightist punch bags, science hating, old farts, wet behind the ears know it alls, and defiantly illogical are the regular visitors to this tavern. Occasionally informative good conversations can be found but one has to sift through many samples which make you feel dirty after like a bad trip to a Tijuana whore house. However, like the meth that many on this forum smoke its addictive and thus my continuous return.

It's good steady work if you can keep out of the political bs. I was In the trades for 38 year and finally managed to retire. It not for everyone UT if you can last at least a few years it looks impressive on your resume. Good luck and try to enjoy the ride.

I agree with 9:42 PM. Keep you head low, agree with whatever mangement says, do not whistle-blow on safety concerns , and you will do just fine.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
