Satan 2 missile

While American workers have been focusing on on pensions, lawsuits, whistleblowing, and shoes that grip, Russian scientists have developed the Satan 2 missile, which is capable of destroying an entire country. Will the LANL and LLNL teams be able to pull themselves out of their misery long enough to counter this new threat?

Stupid, stupid. A "missile" destroys "an entire country"? Yeah, and I bet GMOs are destroying America anyway. Pray tell how a "missile" destroys a country. Which country? Israel(22.1 sq. km.)? The US (9.8k sq. km.) Russia (17.1k sq. km.)? Anyone?? Bueller?

Are you that stupid? What they mean and what everyone else understands is that it is a missile that can carry a nuclear warhead to any spot in the United States. It will not be "one missile" but hundreds or thousands which could inflict enough damage to effectively make the United States cease as a functional nation. You have probably been told this before but you are not the brightest person so take that to heart and think about this the next time you think something is stupid.

If you just drop a single missile on a nation it will not do much. What I don't get is why would Russia spend so much money to build just a single missile? I mean you cannot do much with just one missile, how do they know it it will work? The other thing that is odd is why would just drop a missile, the last time I checked I thought they where suppose to fly on their own.

Uh, that's been true since the late 1950's It seems the hysterical overreaction is a bit late.

"Russia preparing to test new powerful nuke missile that can obliterate entire country the size of France"

"Russian media has boasted that this missile can easily "erase from the face of the Earth land plots the size of Texas""

You still haven't explained how a "missile" can "obliterate entire country the size of France." With what warhead? All Russian warheads are well known to American analysts. How does a new "missile" destroy a larger area? Bueller? Anyone?

Missiles are the purview of Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, etc.. not the National Labs. At a Lockheed Missiles and Space Division, Sunnyvale, CA open house some ten or more years ago, we examined full size and cutaway versions of the submarine launched Trident (then it had ten independently re-enterable warheads), and I also recall seeing a really nifty high altitude kinetic kill interceptor missile that could be aircraft or ground launched. I don't think the US is behind other than the Obama administration trying to give away multiple warheads. Don't worry when Trump takes over the Whitehouse, smarter defense policy "heads" will take over. Star Wars has never let up, despite the lagging input from the National Labs:

Your concern over new threats is valid. However, your focus on the employee in relationship to these threats is misplaced. If the institution can't attract or retain talent, or cultivates a toxic work environment, how do you expect to address these long term global threats with short term profit focused contractors in charge?

Gee, those Russkies sure come up with cool names for their missiles. Just the name, itself, sounds really scary!

Did you guys/gals ever hear of the bomb the "Big Ivan" designed by the USSR "A" team headed by Andrei Sakharov at Arzumas-16 (the Russian LANL). The design yield was over 100 Megatons - sufficient to melt around 1/4 of France. Sakharov wisely negotiated with the Kremlin to reduce the yield to 50 Megatons. US observers estimated the observed yield at 55 Megatons. Khrushchev was pleased ! The Russkies know how to "Go Big". And they have plenty of "Di-Lithium".

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists just updated their note book on Russian Nuclear forces.
http://thebulletin.org/2016/may/russian-nuclear-forces-20169394

"Russia is also developing the RS-28, or Sarmat, which is intended to replace the SS-18 (Satan: RS-20 V) in the early 2020s. A “pop-up” test launch (involving ejection without engine ignition) scheduled for 2015 was delayed, but Deputy Defense Minister Yuriy Borisov says the plan is to start up serial production before 2020, with deliveries beginning in 2018 or 2019 (Interfax 2015a). General Karakayev has said the RS-28 will carry “new types of warheads” (VPK-News 2015), and Borisov says the missile “will be able to carry equipment for surmounting missile defense” and “have a sufficient power reserve to fly over the North or South Pole.” Borisov has also said the RS-28 “will be equipped with maneuverable warheads” (Rossiyskaya Gazeta 2014). It is possible that the program may be delayed by the financial crisis.

Despite the modernization of the ICBMs, it seems likely that the size of the Strategic Rocket Forces will drop below 300 missiles by the early 2020s. Because this force is significantly smaller than the 400-strong ICBM force the United States plans to retain, Russian planners are compensating by increasing the share of ICBMs equipped with multiple warheads. Although, the overall number of ICBM warheads is unlikely to increase, the composition of the force is changing significantly: Prior to 2010, no mobile ICBMs carried MIRVs; by the early 2020s, all will do so."

Our missile defense was never designed to stop a barrage of incoming Russian ballistic missiles. It was designed to stop a "rogue" missile from Iran, or North Korea, or maybe even China. But no US defense was ever designed to stop an all out nuclear attack on the US. That's what MAD is for. No one in the US (or Russia) has ever expected to "defend" against that outcome, since mutual annihilation is assured.

And just how would you know that? Listening obscure late night radio does not make you expert on anything. I bet you think area 51 has UFOs. Your kind of arrogance is the reason people hate the labs.

Most (if not ALL) LLNL and LANL scientists and engineers from the last 20-30 years know the essentials of missile defense. And, anyway it's easy to study up on the subject today. Do some homework ! The "killer" problem for Star Wars (free electron lasers, particle beams, kinetic weapons, space based weapons, x-ray lasers, etc...) was the inability to stop all the incoming MIRV'ed warheads/vehicles and large array of decoys with similar radar signatures. A strong nuclear offense is the only way to counter another nuclear offense. That's what MAD is for.

And by the way, don't dis my Alien friends at Area 51. They are big supporters of the Nevada economy ! The females love to shop in Los Vegas, and the guys love the craps tables !

May 24, 2016 at 8:14 PM is a self-satisfied know-nothing who absolutely hates anyone who actually does know something he does not, so he claims that since he doesn't know it, anyone who claims to know it is lying. The idea that one would choose to comment about missile defense on this blog, while having no clue about the subject, is laughable.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
