LANL PhD's mock-up triggered Sunport lockdown

How's that national service working out for you and your family now?

LANL PhD's mock-up triggered Sunport lockdown. Charged with felony for business travel.

https://www.abqjournal.com/843660/los-alamos-employee-traveling-with-device-arrested-in-sunport-bomb-scare.html

Danielson, 40, is now facing a fourth-degree felony of having a facsimile or hoax bomb or explosive, according to court records. He has no criminal history and Los Alamos National Laboratory confirmed he was an employee traveling on business.

This charge is going to be dropped like rock, it makes no sense that this arrest was done, none. Just a misunderstanding of reality by some folks.

Yeah, a misunderstanding of the reality of the terror threat and airport bombings by some jerk who thought his work was more important and no one would mind a little "mock" device. Earth to LANL: Get a clue. Check with TSA first never entered their myopic little brains.

Sorry not buying it the charges will be dropped pure and simple, no wrongdoing.
By the way what the hell is your problem with LANL, did you get fired or something. Your drivel is getting and old and tired.

Rules that apply to the rest of society do not apply to LANL.
Get over it.

Why wouldn't you ship the mock up through a more official/preapproved channel. We used to take some rather involved engineering mock ups to national conferences, as part of the exposition. But I never carried any mock up/device on my person through security. But then again, this was the early '90's.

Perhaps it was his personal mockup ala Hillary, and therefore did not want it out of his sight.

This conversation is not about what happened in airport or LANL it is about you and your problems with life. You think life owes your something and that LANL owes you something but the truth is you are the one responsible for yourself and why you are a failure. LANL is not your problem, you are your problem, focus on you and how you can improve what is left of your miserable life.

Thank you 9/13/16 7:32 pm. You hit the nail on the head. The TSA is useless and terrorism is not a threat. The rest of you here make me lose faith in humanity's intelligence. Geez what a bunch of bottom feeders.

The TSA draws its employees from the same pool as Walmart Greeters. It is a complete waste of time and money. Just like the rest of the "war on terror"

Anonymous said...

Rant all you want against the system, but understand that is not the issue in this case. While many travelers have frustration caused by the lack of competence and intelligence of the screeners, they respond in a different manner.

What emerged from the police report in the newspaper is the LANL staff member knew what he was doing would create a problem, and still did it anyway. His excuse of having done it before is useless, and as an earlier poster has pointed out his careless actions will have ramifications across all of the DoE.

Prepare for numerous sessions of training on how to travel with props used in technical presentations.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Clearly a lack of foresight on the employee's part. You definitely should not bring anything that gives the appearance of a threat device through a TSA checkpoint.

There *are* procedures for these types of mock-ups (training aids) and they should be shipped separately. However, I can understand if the employee is not associated with the particular programs at the lab that make threat device mock-ups, he would not be aware of these procedures.

Unfortunately, lesson learned the hard way and unnecessary bad press for LANL.

Fine enough however this is not proof of a rampant cowboy culture.

There are many scientists working at LANL that do follow the rules, but all of them must now suffer for this dude's wanton disregard of standard procedure.

It is not too different from all the training on electrical safety that was endured by everyone after some scientist convinced the electricians to turn the power back on at LANCE before the preventative maintenance was complete.

How many "isolated incidents" does it take to define a cultural problem that needs fixing? Consider that this guy can't possibly be the only person who knew he was planning to take this object through airport security on 9/11 (and at least one report claimed his object set off the bomb detector, so it was more than just suspicious looking). None of those other people said enough, or anything, to him about his plan to get him to consider what the officially approved shipment method might be. His supervisor must have known, co-workers, admins. Only a cultural failure can allow an incident like this to take place.

He was reported to be traveling with several coworkers, and none of them appear to have suggested to him that he follow the rules for transporting such items.

First of all you do not know if anyone else knew, you do not even know if actually violated any rules. If you accept at face value exactly what you say that his coworkers knew and the group knew what he was doing and that it was not proper procedure it would mean at most that his particular group could have a broader issues but it in know way means that the larger organization of Los Alamos has an
issue. Your argument is variant what is called the illogical conclusion fallacy,
and boils down to this (one guy may have done something wrong wrong...therefore the
entire workforce of LANL has a cultural problem.) My suspicion that thee person in fact did not violate any rules or where whiten the guidelines but I could be wrong.

Again you do not know if did not follow rules and you do not even know if the coworkers knew what he had.

He was traveling to Washington with the thing, on lab travel with coworkers. Do you seriously think they didn't all know what they were going for, and who had the important prop?

September 15, 2016 at 9:44 PM

Maybe they all had props, maybe it was cleared before hand, maybe they did not know. One thing for sure is that you do not know exactly what happened or if any rules where violated. At this point it looks the charges will be dropped so that very well my be the end of the story.

The way I see it, yes, this guy had poor judgement. However, his lack of judgement was not as egregious as the TSA's hyperbolic response to something that was clearly a government sponsored business trip / official business. What this illustrates to me is the the US Govt does not respect or appreciate lab workers--but I'm sure you all knew that already.

We are considered lowly, scum-of-the-earth contractors not worthy of any self-respect, and treated accordingly.

"that was clearly a government sponsored business trip / official business."

September 15, 2016 at 11:55 PM

Now we get down to the important part of the story.

How do you know that it was "clearly" the case to the TSA? In fact, if it was "clearly" the case to them, this would have never happened. If you have ever traveled with technical props before, you would know that it is not that difficult to follow the proper policy for doing so. Then, if stopped by TSA, indeed it is "clearly" evident to all involved that this is official business and there is not an issue.

Stop trying to put lipstick on a pig, and accept that the employee screwed up.

11:55 PM, thank you for illustrating the cowboy arrogance that characterizes LANL.

September 16, 2016 at 5:36 AM

How does one poster illustrate a cowboy culture of arrogance? This does not follow.
How does his post even illustrate arrogance? He probably has a point about TSA overreacting some cases and under reacting to others, it happens. His argument that the Govt does not respect lab workers is not supported by anything so it just sounds like an opinion to me.

You are assuming that the employee "screwed up" however you have no idea if this actually the case or if proper procedure was followed or not. One thing is clear is that the case was dropped so perhaps there was no violation of laws or rules. On other hand even if this guy did screw up than it is one incident and not a "culture of arrogance".

Yes, you should try it some time, however it will not give the result you want, which is LANL is bad!. If you look at the article it says something very clear which is "data collection" which is something that you have failed to do for 10 years now, because data collection is not cherry picking.

how about all the other travelers who missed their connection to other flights, how about the travelers who missed their original flight, maybe they had important business to conduct for their employers, or they were enroute to be with an ill family member, or maybe they were enroute to a funeral, a wedding, a birth or some type of family event, but heck, what does that matter to that one scientist who is not going to be charged.

Perhaps LANS will be on the hook for the costs associated with disruption of traveler schedules and the cost to the airport for the scientist's arrogance or ignorance - in any event, he was on official duty on behalf of LANS and LANS should compensate those travelers and the airport-related expenses for this incident.

For f's sake what the f is wrong with you!? Seriously you are one utterly bat*t messed up, obsessed psychotic, flaming whack job. Long after you are gone LANL will still be around and all those people you hate, have hated or ever will hate will go on to live happy fulfilled lives. You on the other hand are condemned to live in cesspool of you own making, it is sick, sad, and disturbing all the same time. Just for the hell of it could you tell us your story? You can just give us the cliff notes, maybe we could have some sympathy for you if we knew what the hell happened and perhaps you could gain some insight into your mental situation. So what did happen to you, did you wife run off with a LANL scientist, did a LANL employee steal your dog, where you abducted by aliens and you thought they where working for LANL, is it some weird transference issue from you parents mistreating you? Really give us some clue about how your life took such turn for the worse.

This is one of the better observations on the situation, IMO.

Indeed, LANL claimed that the employee was on official travel and it would flow from that for them to bear responsibility for the impact. There are actual costs that the airlines and other needlessly involved agencies can tabulate. Local police and several Federal agencies, as well as Sunport and the county district attorney, all were forced to waste time on this. Each and every traveler inbound, outbound or transit was delayed and the costs of those delays might be tallied in as well.

Considering the history of civil suits against LANL this might be a windfall for an attorney.

I take it that you are not going to answer the question posed by 8:35pm. What is your problem? You keep going on about LANL but this has nothing to do with LANL it is about you and you alone. Lets here your story. By the way 7.02, 7.42, 8.0 AM and 10.10AM are probably the same guy, kinda screwed up don't ya think.

No lawsuits will be filed, it does not work that way. Look up previous cases for
TSA on issues like this. Again you are also making the assumption that LANL employee broke some rule or did something wrong however you do in fact no if this is the case. It is all just your opinion on the case and you have demonstrated time and time again that you have no idea what you are talking about and you are blinded by hate which ultimately is some kind of self-hatred.

9:03 AM may be on to something.

You can sue anyone for any amount of money at any time with or without a so called "lawyer", I watch Judge Judy so I know my law!. I know that there has been long delays at major airports that much larger than ABQ and no one was sued since there are laws in place about these kinds of things but I am a bat*t crazy hateful idiot who must say anything if it can put LANL in a bad light. Haters got to hate so I hate, and a bitter nutcase needs to be bitter, so bitter I am and bitter I shall be! Can someone confirm that I am a sad bitter idiot?

Yes LANL hater is nuts. The question is if LANL really made him/her insane, was always insane, or become insane for some other reason and just projects it on LANL.

Anonymous said...

LANL hater says he's insane, and revels in it as an excuse for his bad behavior and outrageous posts. He's laughing as the rest of us as we denigrate and condemn him. It accomplishes nothing to accuse someone of something he freely admits and sees no problem with. Since he apparently can't be blocked from posting, which would be ideal, the next best thing is to simply ignore his posts. He has, of course, shown a propensity to respond to his own posts, so unless the rest of us all agree to begin pretending he doesn't exist, he'll continue to get his satisfaction here. I for one pledge never again to respond to any of his posts, or any I even suspect are his. I refuse to play his game anymore.
