President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday pledged his commitment to the U.S. nuclear arsenal, saying the country must “greatly strengthen” its capabilities, at least for now.
“The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes,” Trump said in a tweet on Thursday

So what do the NNSA labs do under the the 2nd Trump administration ? What are the odds we will have a test?

Here comes the s**tstorm.
The press seems to think this is all about carriers and platforms, no mention of warheads. General Atomics, Honeywell, Boeing, all rejoice. NNSA/Labs, not so much.
The labs would refuse to work on new weapons. Most of the "designers" today sit around running simulations.
Most of them have never done a laboratory experient, let alone a test involving high explosives.
Doing an actual underground test or designing something new that wasn't handed to them would be impossible.
It's a nice safe job for them. Why rock the boat.
8:30 AM:
I don't know where the U.S. nuclear weapons program is going. I don't know what the Trump administration has in mind or where world events may lead.
But the Manhatten Project folks didn't have designs to go from either. There was no existing test program to learn from during the 50s. People figured it out. I get tired of the logic that because we haven't designed or tested in (quite) a while, it's impossible to design or test again. If the situation warrants, and if Congress and the Executive branch get out of the way, people will figure it out. (And no, I'm not from Lab management or Public Affairs.)
Let's just hope the situation doesn't warrant.

I agree with the above statement; however, most of them have done laboratory experiments.
Not quite sure that having done tests involving high explosives is the most important requirement.
But the real question is: Why are we trying to build or develop new weapons, which even the military does not want?
Future Idiot in Chief spouts off dangerous bravado comments that can only act to destabilize the world and throw away years of work on nuclear non-proliferation. Glad I did not vote for this fool.
I think many of the former Taiwanese and Chinese foreign nationals who now hold security clearances at the labs would gladly spy for China under the Trump administration. Trump has insulted China. These guys would be easy to turn like this guy.

I hope the FBI is setting up some sting operations to test these guys loyalty.
Expect a lot more Peter Lee and Wen Ho Lee situations.

Excuse me but there is no Peter Lee, there is only Wen Ho Lee. There has been only one high profile spy case in all of the history of the NNSA or DOE labs in that is Wen Ho Lee. If something else happens anywhere in the complex Wen Ho Lee will be brought up along with the LANL cowboys. You need to get your perceptions straight.
There's also the Katrina Leung mess which involved Bill Cleveland, the former head of security at LLNL.
It's mentioned in this article about Peter Lee

The Peter Lee case is well known. Sorry you LANL guys take all the blame. There also was another rumored case that was resolved quietly.

A little short on historical knowledge, are we? Does Rosenberg/Greenglass ring a bell?
The Rosenberg case was shocking!
A little short on historical knowledge, are we?
Knowledge, is based in facts and facts no longer matter in our world. Sorry it is only WHL. You can doubt it all you want but why did LLNL have to be privatized along with LANL after WHL?
12:36 PM, sorry Peter Lee is not well known. Trump could send out tweet about WHL any everyone knows about that, if he said something about Peter Lee, no on would know.
This is our world now.

Senator McCarthy, welcome from the grave. We will appreciate your thoughtful contributions to the discussions. We always need more thought leaders.

Half the population has less. Did they actually understand that the campaigns were not just reality shows, and thought that they were just voting for their favorite?
7:54 You are apparently in the lower half. IQ does not have a symmetric PDF, so, no, half the population does not have an IQ less than 100.
7:54 AM, I think half the population didn't want 4 more years of the same old shite from the ideological "progressive" left, that cares more about causes and manipulative propaganda than about America and the welfare of our citizens. Worse, Clinton is a crook and a liar. The left really needs to understand why it was destroyed last month, and not just assume that everyone who doesn't agree with them is stupid. That sort of elitist attitude is part of what destroyed them, and will keep destroying them.
Half the population has less than average intelligence by definition, dummy!
All the nuclear weapons designers and workers have left. I doubt that LLNL or LANL could design or even build anything nuclear without skyrocketing cost overruns and delays. The labs have become 3rd rate with loads of deadwood in the ranks......
9:23 is a classic case of the type of pseudo intellectual that now inhabits the management circles in our National Labs. It is sad.
Half the population has less than average intelligence by definition, dummy!

Hint: "Average" and "Median" are not the same in general, dummy.

This statement is pure bulls..t !
Both Labs (LLNL, LANL) within the last decade designed modern reliable replacement warheads (RRW remember) that could be fielded without underground testing. Modernization is what the Generals have been talking about to President Trump.
Also, do you think it'a a good idea that our US ground based launchers use 5-1/4" floppy disks and DOS based PC's ? Really ?
Modernization of non-combat military systems will require more intestinal fortitude than most in Congress possess. Just a fact. The generals don't give a shit about nukes, and neither does the public. The Joint Chiefs and the Armed Services Committees, and possibly, Trump's national security advisors, will have to convince him it is a priority. Not likely.
A repeat for the reading impaired:

Many people mistakenly believe that repetition confers relevance and importance.

Many people have an over-inflated view of their own cleverness.

Lowell Wood
Just one example, ancecdotal rather than illustrative.

Lowell Wood
Lowell Wood is the perfect example of this.
I've known Lowell Wood. He might just save the planet (Earth that is !) one day. Clever he is !

Same here however I thought the came across as a utter crackpot. How about this can you name a single "patent" this guy had that ever panned out, ever?
Think about this Lowell Wood has more patents than Thomas Edison, however we know what resulted from Edison what has resulted from any of the patents that Wood has ever done? Something about this just does not add up.
They also keep claiming that he is some kind of genius physicist however his Ph.d is in geological sciences. Again I ask where is all the great science this guy has done, where are all the actual results?

Mr. "Ph.d" is back.
