What's the story with life sciences and Triad?

So what's the story with life sciences and Triad? Under LANS it was CLES with life sciences being more important than earth sciences. Triad has flipped it to CELS by demoting life sciences underneath earth sciences. Is this a sign that Triad plans to phase out life sciences at LANL and move the work to other Battelle run Labs?

Could also be a recognition that earth sciences (e.g., seismology) are much more important to LANL's core nuclear missions than biofuels are.

LANL lost its BSL-3 recently and this may be the beginning of the phase out of bio work there and transitioning the efforts to other, better suited locations.

The letters were rearranged in alphabetical order... And if you read the acronym CELS aloud, it obviously sounds like “cells”, which sounds more biological than CLES. Finally, given Batelle's focus on bio-sciences and their choice of the CELS leader, our glorious B division is primed for growth, while EES will continue to thread water. Hope this helps and clarifies things. This rumor is officially dead.

Thank you 6:59 for explaining what many have wondered for years. It never made much sense as to why geologists, such as Wallace, were kept around the Lab when they did not contribute much to the intellectual vibrancy of the place. Now we understand that it was their special ability to "thread" water that endeared them to the leadership.

"It never made much sense as to why geologists, such as Wallace, were kept around the Lab when they did not contribute much to the intellectual vibrancy of the place. "

The problem is of course the geologists have contributed to a huge amount to the vibrancy of the lab. The second problem is that no one ever wonders why geologists are kept around at the lab or why we have always had geologists. If you work at the lab you would be the very first person to say such a thing.

Look just be honest you have a problem with Wallace, fine but that does not give you permission to say or make up stuff about the lab or what the lab does or a claim a position that no at the lab actually takes as being a position that people at the lab take. To be be clear you free to make up BS but you will be called out for it.

August 2, 2018 at 11:23 AM completely missed the irony and humor of August 2, 2018 at 9:29 AM's post. So sad, and so typical of our hyper-sensitive times. No one has any time anymore for levity or enjoyment of the human condition in its complexity and craziness.

August 2, 2018 at 11:23 AM is just another example of the craziness, who knows no humor. Again, sad.

False, the 9:29AM hates Wallace and it blinds everything he sees.

I think the real question is what happens to T Division in this org?

So of course you know August 2, 2018 at 9:29 AM personally and therefore everything he/she thinks about anything, right? Now you have to explain what "blinds everything he sees" actually means in English. Like I said, crazy and humorless. Sad.

If you work at LANL is not hard to guess who this is and yes they hate Wallace for very specific reasons. They may even have a point in their particular case however their hatred is so strong that they make sweeping claims about anything and everything that could be possibly related to Wallace.

Some would say that our Wallace hater is a weird and messed up person...actually every single person that had to deal with this individual would say that, but yes you are right it is weird and messed up, so we are in agreement.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
