A remarkable lack of NNSA labs in this summery, despite the various crowing...

The NNSA labs should not be doing this work. They should not be doing science. They need to do bombs and nothing else, no mission creep. Maybe we needed science in the cold war when innovation was needed but we are not in the era any more and have not been there for some time.

1:41 notes that the article does not list a plethora of National Labs. I don't know if Berkeley and the NERSC computer center (which was once at Livermore) are going to extol the capabilities of other labs. They may not know what is being done and can't speak to the efforts or it could still be tribalism at play. You don't hear LLNL and LANL crowing about each other. The author of the article was probably reaching out to sources that were already known to him/her and probably had a timetable to get the article out. I am sure that down the road NNSA will get the glossy photos are suitable quotes out to say "We were there!"

5:26 sounds like the fellow on 3/27/2020 @ 4:57 that disagreed with the idea of the NNSA super computers being used to address the virus. The claim that NNSA should not be involved sounds like a "Not My Job" attitude. Roll up the sleeves and get to work or step to the side and say thanks to let those that will work.

4/12/2020 5:26 PM is the persistent "no science at LANL" guy. Just spouting off again, no real comment or new thought. He's also the "Bechtel, baby!" guy from a couple of years ago. He's very bitter that LANL screwed him (in his opinion), and that Bechtel wasn't his savior in destroying LANL as he wanted. He hates science and scientists, and any good works by LANL cause him extreme apoplexy. Pretty sad, really. The really sad part is when he posts that he is really, really, not bitter.

and you are the "bitter" guy. Can't post a thought without the word bitter. We all have to put up with your posts that are not about the topic but instead just a Prologue of why not to listen to someones opinion. It's old.

Somewhat back to the topic. It is finally circulating through the “media” that this may have been caused by an “accidental” release from the virology lab in Wuhan. Trying to apply at least one scientific principle, this may be the simplest answer possibly. Thoughts?

(1) That is just a distraction to take heat off Trump who is the one really responsible.

(2) It is certainly possible and would mean that China has some explaining to do. The reality is China is rather fast and loose with bio ethics in general. Don't be surprised if the when we find out that are making genetically modified people, bio weapons and so on. This stuff could be a real threat to the rest of the world and China is just the country to do this.

(3) Maybe it was just that a accident and nothing more. My understanding is that many labs look at modified strains of such viruses to get idea of where the next flu comes from.

(4) It is no accident someone let this loose maybe not the state of China but some worker ect.

Back in February it was the right wing sources, likely to deflect, but now its starting to come from the left wing sources. I'm starting to think there is more intel on this and its starting to leak out.

The Darwin Award goes to the entire communist leadership of China.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
