Nuclear testing and trump

Is this real? Trump may want to do a NW test? What could possibly go wrong?

For this to come up, there must be an issue in the stockpile. It’s hard to speculate but I could see some aging component making the margins unacceptable. Maybe they’re concerned about this new W93 they’re trying to develop for the Navy. Maybe to field an entirely new weapon they have to do tests.

It is just Trump being Trump. And not necessarily a bad idea, given low yield tests purportedly being done by Russia and China.

The dilemma here is that as the NW program starts consuming the entire military budget, won’t we need greater confidence in NW performance and reliability? That is, with NW programs getting 20% increases in budget every year, we will have to reduce our conventional capability. Ultimately we may have to rely entirely on NW, even to head off a conventional confrontation. Of coarse this makes the world a much more dangerous place, but somehow the NNSA is good at making the argument for huge increases. This has to ultimately come at the expense to conventional forces.

That could be argued both ways. Maybe if we test and it works than other nations are going to say what is the point they could never compete with the US. Maybe China will think wwIII is not a good idea. Of course it could turn out differently and Luxembourg will thing they also need nukes to compete with the US and we start another arms race with more instability.

" This has to ultimately come at the expense to conventional forces."

Good point but than again if someone thinks that the US does not have nukes or they do not work than they could attack. In other words a strong NW deterrent could mean we would need less conventional weapons.

The other issue is China may have been watching what has occurred in the NNSA and DOE since 2000 and think that our capabilities have been degraded. If you take what Nanos had to say about LANL then you might think our capabilities are not what they use to be and that the talent base that existed in the cold war are no longer at the labs. Just a thought. You know when you attack the labs and the people at the labs other nations are paying attention. Now maybe in 2004 no one took China or Russian seriously and we thought that NW are thing of the past but that could be coming back to hurt us now.

At least the "then-than" guy/gal is only randomly confusing the two words now instead of consistently doing so. That's progress!

I see you have very important insights to add to the discussion.

There are no design or component issues with any systems in the current WR stockpile... but there is something definitely wrong with the brain of the a..hole current occupant of the White House.

New Mexico is still a flyover state. No matter how much you try you will be let into the elite class of educated and woke people.

Only certain flyover states should be allowed to vote.

Who is going to do the "allowing"?

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
