The Cost of Being an ‘Interchangeable Asian’

Not remembering colleague's name the next hate crime?

The Cost of Being an ‘Interchangeable Asian’

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/06/business/the-cost-of-being-an-interchangeable-asian.html

White-collar professionals are preparing to return to the office after more than a year of working from home. It hasn’t been a year of just video calls and Zoom happy hours, though. In the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement that soon swept the nation, it’s been a year of reckoning over racial injustice in America. In the corporate world, that injustice manifests in unequal career opportunities for professionals of color. The country has also seen a rise in hate crimes against people of Asian descent, with victims who have been beaten, verbally assaulted and, at worst, killed. In response, many companies have begun “diversity, equity and inclusion” programs aimed at recalibrating their office cultures to be more supportive of minority workers.

But as a first step, what many Asian American professionals need is simple. They want their colleagues to bother to learn their names.

Yes, it’s probably happened to all of us, no matter our identity: An acquaintance or colleague mistakes you for another person with the same hairdo or a similar name. But for people of Asian descent, it happens without question when there are a few other Asians in the office, even when they look and sound nothing alike.

Want to look at the average income of an Asian American to that of other groups. I think they doing ok. I agree that there is some discrimination when it comes to university admissions which should be stopped. I simply do not buy this idea of interchangeable Asian as being proposed in this article. Please provide some evidence. The NYT of 2021 is a far cry from what it was in 2000, 1990 and so on. There is indeed some anti-asian hate crime but again you might want to look at the statistics on that to get a better idea of what is going on .

" The country has also seen a rise in hate crimes against people of Asian descent, with victims who have been beaten, verbally assaulted and, at worst, killed."

This has been going on for about 30 years, and the Bay Area is one of the hotspots. It picked up the last year to do Covid. If you really want make progress on this issue you need to have a honest and hard "conversation" about what is actually going on.

Last week I went to dim sum with my Hong Kong born wife. The waitress, who was also from HK, swore she met her at the airport and they had talked. Never happened. The waitress confused her for someone else. This has happened before. My wife will not be filing a hate crime report or writing an editorial in The NY Times.

There is no such thing as Interchangeable Asian. It was simply made up by the writer. Show me evidence, numbers and data, something they will never ever do. Math is the enemy of the woke.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
