When will NIF get significantly defunded in favor of accident prevention designed (rigorously engineering controlled) new fission power plants? How long can CA, the USA, and World wait given the geopolitics and concerns of global warming?

Before romancing NIF any further, get acquainted with these three books:
"The Fairy Tale of Nuclear Fusion" by Reinders (Springer),
"A Piece of the Sun" by Clery (Ducksworth Overlook),
"Fusion Follies: Carbon-Free Energy and Seawater Sorcery" by Miklosy (Amazon)
The first two books explain why fusion power is not in time to affect climate change even by new fusion start-up companies. The third book looks at the history of LLNL's NIF and how fusion physics must resort to psuedo-science to make fusion power appear credible, and justify DOE/NNSA funding year after year.
