Mobilize to fight anti-democracy

With the upcoming election it is time to mobilize the the labs to fight the ant-democratic forces.

This link is great example of what the labs should doing to join the fight. This is network analysis that shows the nodes and links to groups that are against Ukrainian funding. It shows how they are interconnected. I think a similar but more advanced approach could be used to look at many other connections. This is the most relevant election in the history of the US. Are we going to be on the right or wrong side of history!

In a democracy wouldn't there have to be two sides to various issues -- each side would advocate for its position? This could allow us to refine our policies and also possibly avoid mistaken decisions which hypothetically could occur in relation to any given topic.

One issue I can see with this war, is that Russia has transitioned to a wartime economy and greatly increased military spending, and it may be quite expensive to counter that with a corresponding military buildup among NATO states in order to keep supporting Ukraine and at the same time deter Russia from attacking NATO.

Ukraine also, is not doing especially well on the battlefield and it could be the most likely outcome is the loss of some territory and acceptance of a certain degree of neutrality. The historical precedent for this of course, is the Winter War between Finland and Russia in 1939.

Such a negotiated outcome seems possible and even inevitable and could be in some ways advantageous to continued conflict. Trump's expressed desire to seek out such a plan could be a realistic plan to end the conflict, and hopefully it would be done in such a way as to not have another Russo-Ukraine war at a later date.

Kissinger also mentioned in some of his interviews that he saw the danger that China and Russia were being driven together by the conflict, a development which is potentially damaging for US security. Ending the war on mutually favorable terms that would allow better US-Russia relations in the future, might be one way to obtain an improved outcome there.

Does the original poster wish the labs to become a Political Action Committee?

I prefer them to fulfill a mission of keeping the nuclear stockpile viable, to push the boundaries of science and to fulfill the objectives handed down by the elected leaders.

The labs, like the military, have missions given to them. They may suggest methods but in the end, they do not and should not set policy.

It is not about setting policy it is about being on the right or wrong side of history. We are literally 1935 Germany at this point, we cannot afford to be neutral. The literal fate of the nation is at hand. When I say literally I do mean the metaphorical meaning I mean that is it actually a fact. You do not have the privilege to "prefer" something.

8:02. You keep using that word (literal). I do not think it means what you think it means.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
