LLNS employee statutes in 2021

In 2021, in terms of long term job security, what does it really mean to be a so called a LLNS “Career Indefinite employee” vs. a “Supplemental Labor” employee in practice given LLNS employment actions?

Racism in Geo-science

I am not sure how much Geoscience work is done at LLNL or LANL, but I know Terry Wallace was a geologist. In any case Geology is racist science. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-23936-w Access implies that individuals can obtain the resources they need to safely pursue their science endeavors; regardless of location, instrumentation, site accessibility, and their identity. Historically, access has been limited to mostly able-bodied, white, cisgender, heterosexual men. As the geosciences strive to be more accessible, the community must recognize that BIPOC and other marginalized geoscientists are not always safe in geoscience spaces. For example, holding objects (e.g., a rock hammer) has been viewed as “suspicious” and, continues to be, used as a reason to call the police on Black people, which can lead to the death of Black individuals, entirely because of racial profiling and an unjustified fear of Black people17,22. Organizations can lead by requiring and disseminatin...

Strike approved, but...

Members of the skilled trades union (UPTE) at LLNL voted to strike and the strike was approved. The union has been in negotiations with the lab for over two years and it hasn't gone anywhere.

Wallace retires from LANL

https://ladailypost.com/former-los-alamos-national-laboratory-director-terry-wallace-retires/ Terry C. Wallace, Jr., Los Alamos National Laboratory’s former director, retired from the Laboratory on June 30. I have to say I have not heard many people say anything good about Terry Wallace. I sis heard him make some snide comments about Pete Nanos so at least he has something going for him.

NNSA Approves Critical Decision 1 For Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility

https://ladailypost.com/nnsa-approves-critical-decision-1-for-savannah-river-plutonium-processing-facility/ WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) has announced the approval of the Critical Decision 1 (CD-1) milestone for the recommended approach to produce at least 50 plutonium pits per year for the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility (SRPPF) project at the Savannah River Site (SRS). So from what I hear LANL wants all the pit production. There is some talk that SRS cannot do it or will fail and all the money will have go toward LANL. The plan I think right now is to put every resource we can from LANL into pit work so when and if the time comes to chose between SRS and LANL (1) Either it all goes to LANL or (2) LANL will be abole to keep a good portion of the pit work for the foreseeable future. Right now the entire future of LANL rests on becoming a pit facility.
