Frank Young Reported as Dead

The LANL Blog is shutting down. Doug Roberts reported that Frank Young has died, at that Doug was shutting the blog down.

Frank's involvement on the blog was fueled by his search of being contaminated while working at the lab. He never found his answer, and now he never will.

We've lost a porthole that looked into the sinking ship that was once proudly known as LANL.

My Frank Young rest in peace knowing he did his best for mankind while on earth. It was a pleasure having Frank as a blogmaster giving hope to those of us who were hoping for change in how to both national labs were to be run.

Frank Young, R.I.P. He was a good man.

Somehow, though, I fear the champagne glasses will be clinking together loudly over at the top floors of LANL's for-profit LLC. The LANL blog has been a constant thorn in their side for over 3 years. They never did responded to Frank's many pleas to explain exactly what was in the sludge of those leaking pipes he worked on while he was at TA-55.

Lets hope all the comments made stay available for any future employee to read. Just maybe they'll be smart enough to find employment elsewhere until someday if ever the national labs are absolved of the for-profit beast and once again are under UC control and their outstanding retirement system and benefits.I hate being raped. Rest in peace Frank even if those in control are celebrating your death. As one of my e-mail acquaintances often says,-"We still must be honorable even though those with less standards are trying to make their actions become the new standard" - rb 2010

Franks story should be researched by a journalist. It could make for a decent story, or even a movie, which would really put a thorn in LANL's for-profit LLC.

Frank Yooung (1963-2010), RIP.

My condolences to his wife Dorothy, parents, friends, and blog readers.

I IMHO would value if cause of death could be regognized, and further info from his wife, parents, friends, and when and where the funeral is held.

The LANL Blog ("The Rest of the Story") is now officially closed as of Jan 27th. Doug says he will leave up all the posts as he has done for the previous blog.

Where it all goes from here is anyone's guess. It's clear that NNSA and the for-profit LLCs have been mounting a furious PR campaign to trumpet their "successes" to the world. Official reports of late, however, tend to speak otherwise.

I am so sorry about Frank. Are we going to sit back or demand answers?

"Are we going to sit back or demand answers?" - 5:12 PM

If I was a betting man, I would wager a huge wad of cash on the former ("sit back"). The trend has been firmly implanted over the last few years. Why change now?

As a former LANL employee (now retiree) amd as a long-time admirer of Frank Young (Doug Roberts, not so much), I will miss the LANL blog. I sincerely hope someone steps up amd reinstitutes a LANL blog. Perhaps someone here at the LLNL blog can influence someone at LANL?

Lets hope the LLNL blog stays alive. It isn't about changing NNSA, DOE or LLNS mine, it's about exposing them. We already know there will be no change for the benefit of the employees or the nation.

11:09 am, the remaining LANL staff are too lazy and compliant to handle running a 1st rate blog. Have you been on site recently and seen what remains of the LANS work force?

It's a whole different world from what you once remembered! The corporate sheeple-ization process is almost complete.

11:20 AM its 11:09. 20 years in at LANL. The hammer is bigger than ever. But, there is alot of grumbling. Not sure if it will reach a level that will allow a change. But, I observe there are islands of excellence still present. Able to do science with alot of shielding. Work control is a huge problem but, some groups are able to work around it. The measure which I use is the number of younger folks who still want to stay even having offers from mid level universities. Really, really surprising.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
