Is LLNL competitive?

I might be getting an offer from LLNL. Can someone tell me the average/ expected annual raise and/or bonuses employees get? And does that apply to non-scientists as well?

What's the average, a couple percent these days? Most people are average or just under average, you have to be a shining star and be loved by your managers to get significantly more.

LLNL generally follows large R&D company salary trends. It's sponsor closley controls the purse strings so total wage growth roughly follows COLA minus prrhaps a % over long periods. It generally lags by a few years. Always excuses. Never closure.

Within the organization the salary pool is divided up according to history, custom or inertia. At the employee level the top ranked 10% do very well. The average incresse for senior people is well below COLA average and low performers get little. Growth people ( < 15 years lag industry trends by a few years, But exceed COLA. except in hot local markets like EECS where they lags markets by less. PhDs have fewer job options and are pretty well paid vs. viable alternatives.

By industry standatds the benefits and security are above average. Job content is generally good. Environment varies by otganization. Livermore has become an outstanding livable small city and boasts excellent weather. Housing is very costly but half of Silicon Valley and SF. No bonuses or short term incentives.

Employment is expected to be for the long haul. Security and weapons science take years to master. Derp and strong organizational scientific snd technology roots from its UC past.

Support staff, like admins are well paid and are the best anywhere. Technical staff is superior. Management is less than it used to be. trappedcand hamstrung by NNSA dictated. Safety culture is excellent. Human resources, dictated to by the sponsor is weak and inferior and sometimes poison.

A very good place to raise a family if you are an above average performer with a long term view..

Oh...one more thing. You will make enough so you kids can't get any college financial aid but unless you have two professional earners or a very frugal youbwilk not be able to pay for you kids college.. but the local JCs are good and the military recruiters are nearby. No help fromUC here, they want only non resident victims.

If you can, work for the Security Organization, they are the best!! Kind, cordial, supportive and a great advocate for their employee's. If you are a West Point graduate, have a PHD or even no degree at all, or if you have no tactical or military experience then this is the place to get your foot in the door for a fantastic career. These folks are doing what they say they are doing! BBQ's, ping pong tournaments, movie nights, off site team building events....this is your chance....Step Up!!

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
