I think you misunderstand. These pitiful beings are anarchists. They are unable to cope with society, so they are intent on destroying it. Now that "Science" has hit the spotlight, they will try to destroy it as well, because it is beyond their limited intellectual skills. Yes, there are anarchists out there. Folks whose goal is to pull down anything that serves as a basis to our society. Hence my suggestion of psychotherapy, the degree of self-loathing in those folks has crossed morbid levels.
However I cannot express any pity for these people, regardless of whatever upbringing they may have suffered. The actions of violent rioters or some manager who is a sympathizer are both rejections of the norms of society in favor of complete and utter chaos. Destruction like that must be opposed or we will lose everything that has been built over the ages.
Regarding science that means protecting the history from deletion merely because some of those giants whose shoulders we now stand were Caucasian. Major elements of quantum mechanics stemmed from the efforts of both Albert Einstein and Satyendranath Bose - are you willing to allow radicals to cancel out the efforts of both men? If anarchists are willing to make Einstein an un-person then rest assured that nothing anywhere is safe.

People like Gregg concern me greatly. Although he is well spoken and seems to know some history he is oblivious to the problems of millions Americans face from people like him. I am not saying that Gregg is a bad person but his privilege prevents him from seeing the big picture and the reality. Right now for example American is facing a surge in racial hate crimes against Asians Americans, this is on top of all the racial incidents in 2020. Male white privilege is what ultimately drives this. Now maybe changing a few names might to seem like much but this among thousands and thousands of of small and large things that add up everyday. If you can identify your name with everything in the dominate culture you start to see yourself as greater than the other. Hate crimes, racism, bigotry and marginizaltion via outright or through embedded in the structure of the system itself are faced by 34% of our population perpetrated by 65% of the population. Gregg it is time to wake up. Look at the news everyday there is another story about another incident or hate crime, it is almost like it is getting worse. Please educate yourself, you are spending too much time reading "classics" or history and and enough time reading the news, your silence is violence.

Meanwhile you gloat, standing oh-so superior in your progressive enlightenment.
I don't buy the story. I studied my family history - none of my ancestors were slave owners. I suspect a lot of other families are the same. Many of those families have struggled through their lives, no privilege white or otherwise helping them out. By painting us all with a guilt-brush the "White Privilege" folks are proving that they are the true racists.
It's time these folks along with any other social engineering advocates were handed their final check then shown the door. There is real work that needs doing and it's high time we got back to focusing on science and engineering.

Yes, NYT, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, The Atlantic and Huff post are cutting edge, honest and real journalism. There are many others. I understand that the NYT may be too technical for some but there are plenty of others as I mentioned.
Fox news is propaganda garbage as is talk radio like Rush Limbaugh, and other right radio. Also by far the worse place to get news is off podcasts and the internet. These people do not even have journalism degrees. There is some talk about creating some laws in order to get rid of this stuff due all the violence it causes. You have to get a license to drive a car, you have to go to school to become a doctor, you have to get a law degree to practice law. Why don't we have some kind screening and accreditation to be a news source. If we had this we could get rid of Fox news and right wing radio very fast. Informed and educated people go to real news sources like the ones mentioned but we need to make it clear that fake news is not real news. We need to make it criminals to spread fake news, just like it is criminal to practice medicine without a degree. Fake news is our greatest threat. The idea that someone can just start a random web site, bring out statistics and promote their obvious lies is crazy in the modern information age where anybody can just find this stuff.
Fake news like you find on the internet spreads out leading to extreme levels of violence like the capital riots where 3 cops where beaten and murdered, the murder of protestors in Wisconsin, the huge surge in racists hate crimes against Asians like in Atlanta and San Fransisco. Now let's get back to important matters like whether we are going to continue to do science and engineering at the Labs or are we just going to sit on mushrooms while contemplating our navels.

In any case there is some hope the American Physical Society just today put out a statement against the growing Asian hate crime and mentioned the Atlanta shooting as example of this problem. I absolutely agree to this post. The problem is that one can be rewarded for being political and this mindset is coming to the labs. Just this week at LANL they announced several awards for distinguished performance. Some of these awards are now being given for "diversity" "equality" and "inclusions" activities to be people with rather weak scientific accomplishments. Not that there is anything wrong with promoting aspects of these issues it is just that there many people at the labs who have had very diverse groups over many years where the diversity just occurs naturally by meritocracy and the group leaders in these groups are not going around making a big deal about it since they are concerned more about the results produced by the groups. No one cares about these groups they seem to only care about people who just yell the loudest about diversity issues. It just shows you that it really is only about the politics and no really cares about actual diversity, just the appearance of saying you care about diversity.
So the point is you can be a mediocre scientists and engineer but if you jump on the political band wagon and make sure everyone else knows this in can be very profitable. The issue is if this keeps going at some point this is really going to compromise our science. There is already talk about this issues occurring at universities.
