Herd Immunity

“Herd Immunity” not achievable with the delta variant given its “reproductive number or “Re” is too high, but vaccinations can significantly lower severe illness and death.

I do no understand the argument "herd immunity" is not achievable. All it means is that virus dies out because it has no one left to infect. In some cases the number will be like 95 precent if your Re number is high enough. In fact you could make argument that if Re is high enough you get as many people vaccinated as possible to lower the severity of the symptoms have everyone else go party together in close proximity and than you get your 95%. The other way is just open up protect the most vulnerable and let it run its course. The vaccine is then a way to protect the vulnerable. Of course I doubt you ever get rid of it since it is in so many animals. I am not sure what Australias long term goal is or if it is even worth it. If you buy that natural immunity is the only sure way than everybody in Australia gets it at some point or another. Maybe they are hoping to get everyone vaccinated before that.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole of endless possibilities, here is another one. Having people locked down for over year lowered everyone's immunity so that Delta is now more effective that it would be in any other case. In any case I see all this football stadiums packed, people at concerts, young people are just saying "forget this I am going out". Delta is now going to start the downtrend. People are simply done with this.

As for boosters the number of people that are going to get the booster is going to be much lower, maybe up to 50% lower unless you have mandates with real teeth. Simply being fired is not going to but it, you need to jail people or something. So I predict the booster thing is going to be bust. Saying you cannot fly to Europe or go to Mortens Steak House in Soho is not going to much of an incentive for large portions of the US population.

As for the labs the question is are they going to make boosters a mandate as well? As I said I think a lot more people are going to say no to the booster.

I hope many Lab employees say "no" to the vaccine and to the booster. Many more jobs in Northern NM will open up, and the cadre of anti-vaxxer stupids will be gone. They are starting to realize their world is about to shrink, drastically.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
