Mason just sent out an email on the vaccine mandates.

He laid out the plan which includes vacations and leave until the all clear to come back,
but termination was not listed as an option. Also I am sure working from home will also be accepted in some cases. I told you no one was getting fired.

You must have poor reading skills. Mason clearly said if you don’t get an exemption for health or religion, you have until Oct 1-15 to change your mind and get the first vaccination. Otherwise, LANL will start termination. Medical exemptions will be accommodated via ADA and religious, there are no accommodations. You won’t get terminated but you can take vacation or LWOP until further notice.

Why bother asking people to fill out the religious exemption form, if Mason never had any intention of granting them?

To the best of my knowledge, No other NNSA Lab is mandating vaccinations and rejecting all religious exemption requests,

Today I attended Mason and Sarrao’s POstdoc All Hands meeting (in honor of, ahem, The first day of National Postdoc Appreciation Week). Someone dared to ask a question about medical/religious exemptions, and Mason responded, “nobody is forcing you to have a job here.” Suffice it to say, no more questions were asked.

"Otherwise, LANL will start termination"

Post it if that is the case. It does not say that.

"“nobody is forcing you to have a job here.” Suffice it to say, no more questions were asked. "

Sounds harsh, but as I said they are not going to fire anybody especially because of the demographics of who is not getting the vaccine.

As for nobody is forcing your to have a job here, considering that there is a workers crisis where we cannot find enough workers do you really think firing people is a good idea? In fact if you look nation wide at the vaccination not all that many people are being fired. We will also not mention that working people are already much more likely to get the vaccination anyway. If you want to get more people vaccinated forcing LANL people is going to little impact, you have to go to communities and regions where vaccination is low. The NNSA labs are not one of them.

Totally wrong about that, regarding LANL employees who do not live in Los Alamos.

Maybe not terminated, but after your vacation runs out, you won't be getting a paycheck. LWOP means just that, Leave without Pay. Good riddance.

Actually, it seems nobody on this blog has any reading comprehension. Mason didn't say he wouldn't grant religious exemptions, only that he doesn't have any accommodation other than LWOP for such exemptions if granted. A doctor told me there are virtually no actual medical disorders that would prevent receiving a COVID mRNA vaccine. As a result, I think the discrepancy in how the lab is handling medical vs religious exemptions is due to any medical exemptions being temporary.

Why does this guy keep saying Mason won't fire those who refuse to get vaccinated, especially due to their demographics as crusty old conservative white men? For once, the lab actually has somebody who can make a decision and walk the talk. Shocking to you all, as it is to me.

Oh....ok. Even without privy knowledge it is beyond trivial to figure out.

Just out of curiosity why do you make such a claim? I would really like to know

Ok let us do the most simple thing but there are many others.
Are you seriously trying to claim that NNSA labs have low vaccination rates? You know the data is all in the public and can found in lets see, ...typing on google...Covid all cases, look New Mexico, at even gives the county we live in...him, let click a few other conties..hmm well I see a pattern.

I am no big fan of NYT but whatever they have some data if you want to work at it. Lets just look an the counties where the vast majority of LANL employees come from.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/los-alamos-new-mexico-covid-cases.html

Let see, add the 4 , carry the two, divide by one...wait, no divide by two...ok

Los Almaos County 76 %
Rio Arribo county 61%
Bernalilo ,, 57.7%
Sandaval 60.7%
Santa Fe, 66.5%
San Miguel, 54.06%
Torance County, 34.8%
Coelfax, 52.39%
Mora, 53%
Toas, 67%

Hmm notice a trend? I can do the next step but come on man.

The point is trying to get NNSA lab members vaccinated with the big chunks majority coming from LA and SF county. I think you need
to concentrtae on the other counties.

A better point is that to get the small number of people from Rio Arruba who work at LANL and have not gotten vaccinated to get vaccinated will have a low impact to the total number of vaccinations when what you should be doing is going directly to Rio Arruba and trying to get people vaccinated.

One the problems with this approach of going directly to these communities is that goes against the media narrative that all anti-vaxers are conservative whites, which is statistically not true. If you look at NYC the most unvaccinated population are blacks between 17-40 at like 27%. Similar trends fall everywhere. I attest that people just go along with media narrative I have had family members just go about how the Trumpers make up all the unvaccinated people. I can even ask how do they know this and they say it is all over the news, if I tell then you can look online at the actual numbers and they just say I must be listening to Fox News or right wing media. I can even show them the online data and they simply think it is a Q-annon site or something.

ORNL leadership recently circulated remarks from Mason to backup the ORNL leadership team decision for a vaccine mandate and unpaid leave for religious exemptions. It seems that Mason, Zacharia and Peery all coordinate their messaging. Not surprising since Zacharia was Mason's deputy at ORNL and Peery had a short stint at ORNL before becoming a lab director.

Zacharia has announced a "One ORNL" goal that 100% of COVID-19 cases are preventable.

What doesn't get mentioned, but is widely known, is that last month almost half of ORNL's COVID-19 cases were among fully vaccinated staff.

ORNL hasn't announced what steps they will take to completely prevent any COVID-19 cases at the lab and achieve their goal. The remaining unvaccinated staff will be gone by Oct 15th, so all new cases after that date will be breakthrough cases.

ORNL has issued lanyard badges to staff who have presented proof of vaccination. The oversize green badge (with a white check mark and the word "vaccinated") is worn behind the DOE badge. To incentivize staff, the lab doesn't require social distancing between staff that voluntarily wear the vaccination badge. Which means conference rooms are now at full occupancy again - just with staff displaying the check mark! Of course everyone is wearing a cloth face covering indoors. It does make one wonder if the lab is inadvertently driving the cases among the vaccinated by waiving social distancing. A plastic badge with a check mark isn't really a substitute for legitimate PPE.

""One ORNL" goal that 100% of COVID-19 cases are preventable."

That makes no sense, that is not possible. You could say 100% of people vaccinated which is a achievable goal but 100% of preventable cases is not a possible. Statements like this do not put management in the best light in terms of understanding science.

No "squiggly red lines," "home" is a perfectly good word. Stop being so prissy.

Why would home have a squiggly red line? I could understand homme or hume but home, no I do not see a squiggly red line.

Oh, I get you pain, berry funning, ;)

A clarification was posted on the faq this week. Even if you telework you need to be vaccinated, no exceptions, and all LWOP employees are subject to be fired, after the 30 days of holding their job is up. If you don't get the vaccine started before october 1 or don't respond to the requests to schedule, you'll be fired effective the 15th.

What precisely is the scientific underpinnings for a vaccine mandate if the virus can be caught and transmitted by vaccinated people? Is it to protect the unvaccinated as we fire them from their jobs and kill them socially?
