Is civil war imminent?

 So on this blog in the past there has been a few mentions of America heading into some type of Civil war. This was usually dismissed but now even the most naive have to start thinking that something is seriously wrong. I am not sure about Civil war but some kind social break down, break up of the nation or something is looking like a real possibility. If that is the case what happens to the labs?

I think someone should design an SDI-type system to harmlessly intercept bullets. Hopefully the government could retain the key patents and use the revenue (which would hopefully be massive) to reduce the deficit and pay for the program. It could also be used to protect our soldiers in wartime, and our children in school, as well as prevent political violence. Maybe we could also prevent deer from being hunted out of season. As far as the possibility of civil war, it seems exceeding unlikely to me at least for now.

The Utah governor asked for off ramp to political violence. For example this would be the ability to have a civil debate using reasonable conversions. They just killed the guy who did just that. Of course it could that this was just a lone nutcase who should be condemned universally but we have a portion of Americans celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk. I know this because of my colleagues at universities have celebrated the death of someone who who had moderate conservative views. The implications of course is that they would want me dead and up to 100 million others if they really believe this.

I understand extremest on both sides should be condemned but I am shocked and saddened by the huge number of people celebrating the death of someone over free speech and wanting to have a debate. If there are that many people out there that want death to anyone with a different opinion than I think we are in trouble, a lot of trouble. Why should they stop with Charlie Kirk, who was a moderate, they may well go after everyone now. If you call 50% of American Nazis and really believe they are Nazis how do you think this ends?

Of course I think most of these people have little knowledge of Nazis, or how authoritarian regimes arose in the past and as paradoxical as it may seem Antifa is actually aligned with fascists tactics and beliefs. Does anyone know about how in Germany in 1930s groups of fascists student activist would go and shut down and cancel professors for their speech. All the tactics of Antifa are straight out of the fascists moments of Spain, Germany, Italy and Portugal. It is uncanny how similar they are but people are so uneducated that they have no idea of history.

Just to keep it simple , if you are against free speech you are on the wrong side of history. Please read some history.

That's a really good idea, so long as it has a Soviet style nuclear interceptor like what protects Moscow, as well as a laser interceptor. This will ensure equal funding for LANL and LLNL. The NNSA can sell the laser part to the public as a commercial power plant research project and the nuclear part as remotely delivered radiotherapy cancer treatment that can conveniently treat you while you're on the go.

SDI = strategic defense initiative
aka Star Wars, space and or land based laser shooting down incoming reentry vehicles with nuclear payloads. Then there was the brilliant pebbles missile defense program.. slightly different way of doing that.

You need to stop listening to MAGA heads. The reason? They think "antifa" is an organisation. It isn't. It is a position/ opinion".
Being antifa = being anti fascist.
Therefore anti antifa is being fascist. You are not fascist, are you?

There might be other means -- for example we would just need a system of high speed cameras that would track the bullet in flight. Miniature rockets could be deployed to home in one the bullet using telemetry provided by the cameras, and at an appropriate point in the trajectory a Kevlar parachute would be deployed, catching the bullet and also slowing the rocket to a harmless velocity so it could drift back to earth.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
