Hiring freeze

 https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/10/ensuring-continued-accountability-in-federal-hiring/

Trump on late Wednesday signed a new executive order that told agencies to restrict hiring throughout the federal government, providing some exceptions related to immigration enforcement, national and public security, and political appointees.

Does this affect the labs, NNSA, DOE?

Labs are private, for-profit contractors. This does not directly impact the labs.

Sandia has had essentially a hiring freeze for months, LLNL has been slowing back on hiring the past few months as well, not as bad as Sandia. LANL pedal to the metal apparently.

In 2013, LLNL Director George Miller came up with clever ways to soften the blow. He was an excellent leader who cared about the mission and the people. Unlike subsequent and current directors.

10/17 6:18 um you mean Parney Albright, he move a few of the holidays forward in the year.. and three months later he was out of a job.

George Miller was LLNL Director from 2007 until 2011.

It's not that our current directors are horrible people, but they are all clearly weak-willed politicians who's chief skill is shifting with every change of the breeze. They don't have any principles or ideas of their own and they always lead from behind. That's the path to success in modern NNSA organizations.

Yes. You are right. My memory has been volatile lately.

George Miller "It is what it is" with tears.

“George Miller "It is what it is" with tears.”

What is your interpretation of this? Please explain.

During the contract change George would have all-hands meetings in the B123 auditorium and explain that the changes coming down the pipe were beyond his or anyone else's control with the phrase "It is what it is." Often this was accompanied with a near tearful expression, which I could not tell if it was genuine or not. I couldn't blame the fellow, he was handed cards that were stacked against him, but as president of LLNS, his financial future was in better shape than the rest of us. I could have done without the tears.

If we only had the corporate translator cat in our George Miller All Hands meeting https://m.youtube.com/shorts/LqBbh1Jl9D8

The corporate translation would be: while I am going to keep my UC pension, you will be soon paying 7% after tax… don’t think of it as a 7% pay cut but it will be. You will have the same health insurance choices… it’s just going to cost you dramatically more. Oh and if you make it through the coming layoff’s just wait until 2020 to see the prize we have for you MinSafe workers stuck working onsite.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
