LLNL PhD Free Pass

 Anonymously contributed:

How many LLNS or past UC/LLNL employees, were subsidized by tax payers $, to get a free Phd, and not advance their field whatsoever? And instead, just become an untouchable employee, independent of Lab employee conduct expectations?

Master Degree level, or less Division Level managers or above, that also have near zero engineering achievements themselves, will not rock the boat, to protect themselves. Sad..I would not want to be a female working under this BS culture.

I worked at LLNL for 20 years. Before Bechtel, it was a joy .Below market rank and file salaries mattered very little.
Salaries were publicly available and disparities were flagrant but we accepted that. Enter Bechtel with its new class of fat management. The mission became earning the fee. Creativity and hard work no longer paid . The only ones who stayed were those close to retirement and those who couldn't hack it anywhere else.

100% correct. In 2026, what has changed? Only the year.

Corporate management has been a disaster on every level.

“Corporate management has been a disaster on every level.”

A sole source “for profit” contractor that can depend on the NNSA for decades of uninterrupted funding without competition. What can go wrong?

The labs are about money now, not service to the nation.

LLNS leadership, many underperforming and accomplishment free, prefer the moving walkway”(airport analogy), advancement path, compared to accomplishment criteria for advancement, and that was the beginning of the end at LLNL starting in October 2007. Very sad and predictable. The transition from UC/LLNL to LLNS, was HUGE mistake for tax payers.

Privatization was a crap shoot. It didn't work. Congress, Dems and repubs, know it but do nothing about it. Bechtel and similar outfits have a strong lobby.

LLNS ranks its employees on a set of performance criteria to acknowledge employee accomplishments and set their annual pay, but LLNS itself, has not been subject to alternate contractor competition for nearly 20 years.
Performance expected for thee but not for me.

There are plenty of professional useless people at both labs in the Livermore valley. You could selectively eliminate 50% of positions at both labs and not see a difference.

Some groups have masters level managers… others went to a “technical” school. However in terms of laying off 1/2 the staff I would say that this is the case because the physics labs have allowed certain individuals to create little toxic, totalitarian empire’s of inefficiency. They will stop your work and then you have to play their high school level games to get anything done. Incompetent roadblocks is all they are. For example 4 labs buy the same lifting shackles, or power tool and you will get 4 different ratings at 4 different labs. Yea I would like to see the CFR policy and math on that one.

Management is very fat and happy. They're scrambling due to renewed oversight is the rumor. Mass restructuring and "changes" have been mentioned and the rumor mill is churning faster than seen for years. Funding allocation despite a larger than ever budget is forcing their hands in potential layoffs.
