They are hiring at LLNL!

Are they or arent they? Will funding be available after what happened in the elections?

Definitely hiring in the professional and technician categories.

Are the positions FTE or Contract? I would be surprised if Technician positions were FTE. Contract labor is so easy to kick out the door.

Election impacts TBD. All the Republican senators signed a letter that they would not vote for the New START treaty without a significant uptick in funding to the complex. With Senator Mitch in the lead, I suspect they'll be more interested in just forestalling ratification for a couple years pending their hoped 2012 victory.

If by FTE you mean Indefinite Appointment, then I would guess that most are coming in as Flex Term appointments. But that's still LLNS employment rather than contractor (supplemental labor).

FTE for me meant Full Time Employee, an old quaint term from the time where Flex Term was not on the horizon. Hadn't thought that FTE could be the acronym for Flex Term. But then again, I still recall Red and Green badges.

So my question of Nov. 7 at 9:07 should have asked are any of these position for non Flex Term, Non Contract?

"Google to give 10 pct raises to entire work force" (AP News, Nov 10)

NEW YORK – Google is reminding its 23,300 employees how much they are appreciated by giving them all 10 percent raises next year.

The Internet search leader also is shifting a portion of the annual bonuses into workers' regular paychecks. Google Inc. CEO Eric Schmidt celebrated the good news in an internal memo Tuesday to employees.

The planned raises, earlier reported by the technology blog Silicon Alley Insider, were confirmed Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Schmidt says Google wants to reward its employees for their hard work, but it also could be meant to prevent rivals such as Facebook from luring its workers away.

Meanwhile, back at the NNSA labs.... the idea of giving the technical staff part of the 20% bonus of the LLC executive management team as they are doing at Google? You've got to be kidding. Miller, Mikey and Bechtel will be keeping all of their new found lucre, thank you very much!

Google earns every penny! I am glad to see them share their prosperity.
Why isnt LLNS the same way? They have no incentives to do that and they dont have competition!
Our congress people must feel proud!

From what I have seen so far, the grand plan of the "for-profit" LLCs is to reduce the cost of doing science per the direction of the NNSA. The process involves 3 steps:

(1) Hiring a few highly paid scientists at the upper "Research" position levels to manage science projects

(2) Getting rid of most of the current scientists at the mid-level research categories to off-load the benefit and salary costs that make up the major portion of the lab's scientific cost structure

(3) Re-cycle lots of cheap post-docs into/out-of the labs and have them work under the few highly paid research program managers listed in step (1)

The latest employment stats seem to support this trend. It is no accident that it is trending in this fashion.

I don't think they are hiring back in ex employees. I'm beginning to think I might be blacklisted. I worked there for ten years, great reviews every year, nothing I know is on my file that is negative. But still no interviews..I know someone else who is experiencing the same thing. I gave blood, sweat and tears for my job, worked a lot of overtime and took on more work duties for the greater good of the team. Of course I will never know if I really am blacklisted, but my gut is telling me yes. Just like towards the end of my employment there, I felt a disturbance in the force. I have mixed emotions of anyone wanting to work there, including myself. Sometimes I miss it (there was a lot of good) and other times I'm so glad I'm not there. I don't know if any other employee or ex employee feels the same way as I do. Of course, it probably didn't help that at times I spoke my mind. :-)

I know of four layed-off employees being hired back. I think you need to apply. Of course there is the real possibity that you are blacklisted. That wouldn't be unusual.
