Gov. slams planned nuclear waste storage site
SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham came out swinging Friday against a planned facility to store spent nuclear fuel in southeast New Mexico, saying it would be “economic malpractice” to open such a site in an oil-rich region that’s also home to agricultural operations.

Looks like NM no longer wishes to be the USA dumping ground for nuclear waste. Can't blame them for that. I am not aware of any CA locations willing to accept this radioactive waste.
Just holding out for more money
She only trots out the “I care about New Mexico oils and gas” when she see something more perverse. And I am guessing that it’s 240 permanent jobs as opposed to the bust - boom jobs offered by the oil and gas industry. Besides, America has no long term plan for permanent storage so we might as well take advantage of the money and jobs. How much does the federal government collect annually from the nuclear power plants for a long term repository. There is money to be made here.

I don't know enough about the NM Governor to challenge your point. I do know after the WIPP radiological accident, NM residents have no reason to trust the competency of DOE or the NNSA. And, I do not see anyone in CA leadership with welcoming arms in Barstow, Mojave, or other CA areas encouraging this radiological waste storage to come our way.
If it is in New Mexico it is about money, in other words you need to pay off the right people. Fortunately, in New Mexico the price is not very high, 2k to 10k to a few people and the deal is done. In other parts of the real United States it would be in the millions with many contracts and favors to do something like this. So expect an announcement real soon that shipments of waste to New Mexico will be starting. Remember this is New Mexico so don't overthink things.
All the BILLIONS wasted on the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada that was supposed to store high level nuclear waste. Thats the real crime. I remember Harry Reid the senator of Nevada taking ALL the Billions to study and prepare the site so in the end he could come out and say not in my backyard when it was close to becoming reality.

Hey, give Harry a break. He simply elevated the Casino approach to fleecing the customer to the National Level.
