How bad will this get?
Another Covid surge is on its way, LANL is back to masking and many people are talking about work of from home again. How bad will this get?

I'm not sure how wearing masks again at LANL or working from home compares to other matters, including many lesser income Americans that are struggling to make financial ends meet in this inflationary period. Think about it.
"Struggling to make financial ends meet" generally doesn't make you seriously ill or kill you. Around 350 people are dying per day from Covid."
If "struggling to make ends meet" translates into inadequate funds for proper nutrition, inadequate funds to cool or heat your home, or inadequate funds to see your doctor or acquire needed prescriptions, this can make one seriously ill too. So what PPE might be required at LANL, an employer provided N95 mask? Is this really a hardship for most employees?
I had doubts about a Civil war but several friends and family are basically saying stuff like this since Trump was elected, they really believe that Trump and republicans are actually fascists, and that the United States is uniquely evil nation in history of the world. If it is a civil war it will be like a religious war.
I agree but that year of nonstop riots by the left was also a sign of a Civil war.

I am not sure about a Civil war but I have seen things in the last 5 years I have never seen. You have families where members will not talk anymore due to politics. Of course you could say this always been true but I have never seen so many families like this. I am not choosing sides but in every case I know it is always the left wing family member that cuts others off and you cannot reason with them. What is odd is that these family members got along just fine for 30 years. Trump gets elected and suddenly grandkids are barred from seeing grandparents, people get upset if you mention a family members name, adult children will no longer interact with parents or siblings. Much of this is pushed by social media and news sites where there are pieces that go about how you should cut off friends or families who voted the wrong way or do not have certain symbols on the facebook feed. By the way the other group that does this kind of action are Scientologist who call it disconnection. "Disconnection is the severance of all ties between a Scientologist and a friend, colleague, or family member deemed to be antagonistic towards Scientology. The practice of disconnection is a form of shunning" In fact cutting off friends and family is a standard practice in cults. Despite what Huffpost, Vox or your facebook friends say psychologists point out it is a very bad idea to cut off family members. Next time you say " I will no longer speak or allow my children to speak to family members because they do not share my politics" ask-yourself are you doing this to fit in with your facebook group or do you actually believe this.
I don't do social media and I have the good sense and grace to not discuss politics or religion in polite company, just the way I was brought up. Stay in your lane and MYOB.

I do the same thing and I never bring up politics. The thing is I regularly go to Universities for talks, panels and collaborations and politics are always brought up but in way that assumes everyone must be on the left and republicans are these extreme people that never set foot on a campus or they hear that republicans exist but they have never meet one before. They simply assume you must be exactly like them. This has been true for the last 20 years. It use to be "of course we all agree Bush is criminal and Cheney is running the show", then it was "you must be so proud to have voted for Obama", to now "we all know Trump is fascist". At least during the 90s you had some faculty who where not exactly Bill Clinton fans and would say it in public. After Bush was elected things started to change, so many of my academic collaborators would start saying how they are embarrassed to go abroad because of Bush, that Bush was dumb and evil, Cheney controlled Bush and so on and no intelligent person could ever be a Republican.
After Bush it just assumed that the entire academy thinks the exact same thing. I just smile and get back to science and they assume you on board. Now I know they do not all believe this and many are moderate as they will tell me privately but you would never know if meet them in person or have a conversation with them. I even know one who has a spouse that is prof at top 5 law school, I once asked her she felt conservatives students are afraid to speak up in her classes, she was shocked and said, " there are no conservative student at her law school because it was so highly ranked that only the smartest could get in". I then asked how is it that a number of conservative judges and politicians have attended that law school and was told that was years ago when standards where lower. I simply agreed and changed the subject as she actually answered my question.
I am not sure what you point is. Of course more intelligent and educated people will more progressive and this has always been true. As for cutting off friends and family that support insurgencies, terroists, racists, watch hate propaganda or believe people should be allowed spread hate in public, that sounds like a rational thing. How can you reason with people like that, their minds are made up and that is all I have to say on that.

One cannot be tolerant of intolerance. You can can call it elitist if you like but some ideas, thoughts, people and views that are not work considering. At some point you have to put some faith in expertise and call it like it is. We have 80 million people who should not have a say in how things are run and these people are dangerous to us us and each other. This is just a fact. It came about due to a our tolerance of intolerance. We have have been warned about this before.
The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Karl Popper described it as the seemingly self-contradictory idea that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must retain the right to be intolerant of intolerance.

Yes my mind is made up because I have critical thinking skills, listen to reliable sources, do not give into hate and have a open minded. Being open minded means hearing other opinions, however that time is long past, racism, hatred, intolerance, greed, colonialism and capitalism are not up for debate anymore. People who push for this are not worth interacting with. Being able to think is not being "elitist". My mind is made up after seeing facts, consulting with experts, getting educated, reading reputable books. My mind is not made up listening to Q, being a part of coup, or being a war mongering fascist. My mind is made up on these facts.

Specially it means making sure Trump does not get elected in 2024 and goes to jail.
That all the republicans get thrown out.

That steps are taken so that misinformation and hate cannot be spread on social media.
