Layoffs in October?

Anonymously contributed:

Despite the ULM talks, people are still talking in the halls about a layoff in October. What's your opinion?

My votes on Feb of 2009 when they realize the budget is bad and no work is coming into LLNL.

I'm thinking it will be June 2009 after NIF's open house in May.

okay...so 2009 is the most likely time frame for a layoff. How many more people will LLNS need to boot to be solvent? Also, do think most of these will finally come from within the NIF family?

So many people are leaving voluntarily (getting jobs outside the lab - what a surprise eh ULM!) that maybe they won't need to do any layoffs.

I predict early October 2008

Just a guess -- Oct. is too soon. Will probably be a few months after the fiscal year begins, maybe Dec., until the hand-writing is on the wall.

Even if LLNL squeeks through with a Bush FY09 budget, you can expect that the new crew running the White House (be it McCain or Obama) will be looking to make huge cuts in the nuclear weapons area for FY10.

The NNSA complex is going to be 30% smaller much faster than within the 10 years stated by NNSA and it will *not* be done by attrition, that you can be sure of.

I hear 2 potential dates for layoffs of career employees...Oct 2008 and March/April 2009.

Why even bother picking a layoff date? We're going to have a system of "rolling layoffs" for years to come.

No one who works at LLNL will have any job security unless you happen to work for LLNS ULM.
