Target: DOE to cut 50% of solar cost by 2030.

DOE should concentrate on getting rid of fossil fuels. Also if solar costs are reduced by 50% it will just incentivize more contractions, buildings, and growth of cities and populations. It is not just clean energy it is energy consumption that needs to be reduced to save the planet. What is so hard about this to understand by DOE or anyone else?

Less money that Solyndra and split up amongst many companies so one company's failure doesn't produce as much egg on the face.

I see Sandia gets a spot at the trough, but not LANL or LLNL.

Would DOE care to throw some money towards battery technology that makes all this solar stuff work through the night and cloudy days, or has Tesla got that solved yet?

And hopefully, we can dig all the raw materials out of the earth without the need for those nasty fossil fuel machines.

Don't worry about it. China will do all that and it won't affect the US climate at all.

This is why it is so important that we keep a good relationship with China. It is not enough to be friendly for diplomatic reasons but also climate issues as you have pointed out. Luckily with the current administration things are improving and we can find common ground with China.

Relations with China are not improving with Biden's weakness, and you are delusional if you think there will ever be "common ground." The only ground China recognizes is their ground, expanding daily.

Common ground? Such as you take our technology and we will let you. Such as you steal all of our peoples personal information and we will let you. What precisely do you expect to find in “common”?

I take that you are Q-Anon followers and think the evil Chinese Jewish lasers and G-5 with rare metals for China are going to kill us. I simply do not understand your thinking and conspiracy theories. Common sense dictates that sanity of the current administration has to better than the four years of chaos from the last administration. Everyone needs an enemy. China has never had colonies, never tried to invade the world has historically been fairly isolationist. Maybe they just want a fair trade and improve their land. Maybe the nukes in China are to protect from invasion and to enforce fair trade. Yes there an be much common ground if you get out of your bubble. For example if you are worried about global terror China could be a great ally.

Hello 3/27/2021 12:38 AM,
That is what the goal behind reducing solar costs, isn't?
To get rid of fossil fuels.
Am I missing something?

The point is to reduce all energy use and change the lifestyles that consume so much of the words resources. Sure clean energy is better than fossil fuels the problem is it is not changing the way we live. We need to stop flying to Europe or Hawaii once a year for vacations. Sure you can make the planes cleaner but that does not change your lifestyle. You need to not have so many lights in your house, have these giant houses, huge yards, multiple cars, computers, trying to upgrade our lifestyles and getting high tech toys. Again you can power your house with solar panels but you are still building giant houses, buying endless trinkets , eating tons of meat, driving all over the place in huge trucks, sending your kids on semester abroad programs and this is the problem. The real key is to change people, not simply say they can keep living their lifestyles as long as the use green energy. In the US the middle and upper middle class have utterly polluted the land, used up the resources and have promoted an unsustainable lifestyle. We keep making suburb after suburb to move out of the cities or rebuild whole neighborhoods to gentrify it. So many people particularly people of color have suffered from this. I am all for green energy but first we need to change our habits, after that we can use green energy in a much reduced rate.

Curious that your response to those folks included nothing of substance. Just political talking points. I think you should go live in China. Oh, wait, you already do...!! And Scooby has no defense against Chinese trolls. Who of course wouldn't consider a national nuclear weapon lab-related blog important at all.

Out of my bubble? Do you dispute technology theft? Do you dispute the hacking of government servers? I assume you like the way they fight the war on terror by imprisoning their Muslim citizens.

"Do you dispute technology theft? Do you dispute the hacking of government servers?"

I have only heard of Russians hacking the elections and after nothing was done they started hacking the government servers. If you have watched the news you would seen all these stories on Russian hacking not Chinese.

Depends entirely on what news you watch. I watch many sources to try to get truth. You won't get it from only one source.

I am all for being informed but do you know if you looking at fake news. With mainstream media you at least a getting news sources that abide by journalistic standards and will not lie, spin or leave out information. Sure you may watch many sources but how do you know what is real or not. Like it or not fake news is one of the major threats to our democracy and we have to seriously think about some restraints on so called free press. I think we should seriously make it a law that one must be certified to be a "news source" and violations of this will be criminal offenses. I am not saying your are dumb or not informed I am just saying that even the smartest person can be fooled by fake news. Fake news is like a dangerous controlled substance it has to be regulated. One cannot yell "fire" in a theater and one should not be able to say fake news either.

Your opinion is totally misinformed and patently false. Plus, naive in the extreme. You are the kind of people the MSM really, really likes.

But, the prevalence of trolls and subtle sarcasm on this blog is increasing, so...

Technology theft by China is known. It is not news. If you had any relation to the DOE or DOD you would know that. Hacking of government servers is also known. If you have any relation to the DOE or OPM you would know that. Many of us have identity theft insurance because of it. These odd sound bites and “twitter like” posts I am seeing on this blog lately are disturbing.

In some ways I agree but right now America has its own problems to deal with such as racism, domestic terror, and the migrant surge. Once these issues are addressed when can start dictating terms to China. Screaming "China this, China that" is a right wing talking point to make forget about our real issues.

The "real issue" of China invading Taiwan will happen any day now. Will the US stand idle and watch a brutal communist dictatorship take over a US ally?

4/03/2021 5:04 PM

My sense is yes, we will stand by. I doubt we could do much anyway, and the US public will not really be pushing for Biden to respond, they simply do not care about Taiwan.

However with that being said China may not do invade Taiwan, they may simply pressure their government to simply give them more economic control or even send some money to the mainland in exchange for "quasi" independence. In the past Taiwan would have fought to the death to keep its independence and probably would have had help form various allies. Now I think they know that China is simply way too powerful and that they may not get much support from allies, so they could just agree to some of Chinas conditions. It may be possible China does invade and Taiwan simply rolls over. In any case I do not see the US responding much.

You can war-game the different possibilities if the US did respond and it gets dicey really fast. (1) The US forces repel the invasions by easily defeating the Chinese navy and Chinese air force and makes China look weak. (2) The US responds but is simply not effective. This makes the US look very weak. (3) If (1) happens we could risk China using a nuke on a US base or fleet. (4) If (2) happens would the US be willing to use a nuke. In other words any kind of response to China risks nuclear exchange at some level, although probably limited. I suppose it is also possible that if (1) happens China could simply back down, or if (2) happens the US will back down, but do we really want to take that risk of any of this.

A more cynical view is that it is simply not worth it to the US, we simply do no gain much and we have way more important things to worry about like transgender bathrooms and Cardi-Bs WAP.

Most likely China gets Taiwan and we punish China by not buying some plastic toys in China. I personally think that China will simply get Taiwan to go along with them and give in to their demands without an invasion.

Of course there could be many other possibilities that I have included or foreseen but this is just my take.

I you think "plastic toys" are all we import from China, you are delusional. If China takes Taiwan, Microsoft and Apple (and many other smaller US companies) will go out of business due to no semiconductor supply from TSMC.

You are kinda of making my point. If China takes Taiwan, then Microsoft and and Apple will demand that the US do nothing so they can keep their supply going. To respond to China in a way that has no real consequence but makes it seem like we are doing something is that we will stop buying some plastic toys. Of course China will just sell these Singapore which will sell them to the US. In other words China taking Taiwan is simply another step towards globalism. How the US reacts will be strongly influenced by how what our giant corporations. China could also tell Facebook that they can get access to the China market if they go along with this. China taking over Taiwan would also mean cheaper semiconductor supplies. Like it or not but big corporations do not like the idea of groups of independent nations and Taiwan does not really fit into that picture very well. If you have been following the news certain agencies like the WHO will not acknowledge Taiwan and will not allow it membership and get rather angry when it is mentioned. Basically it is just good global business to forget about Taiwan and just let China have it.

If you think TSMC will be allowed to continue global trade to its current customers once Chine is in charge, you are delusional. China's ally will get first priority, the west, last priority. Plus, the Taiwanese are not gong to bend over and produce for Chinese dictators. There will be much death and destruction.

This is why I think China will not invade Taiwan. It is risky for them since it could be bit tougher than they think. If the US gets involved it will be even tougher. I think China will get Taiwan through global pressure. China will just make hard to be ally of Taiwan. As I said they can give Facebook, Twitter or other high tech dibs on Taiwan or China if they go along. These companies will then pressure the US or whatever government and they have a lot of pull.
