UC Official: Overlapping Lab Director Searches A ‘Positive’
Bruce Darling, the University of California’s Vice President for Lab Management, provided few details about the searches for the next laboratory directors at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories yesterday, but he dismissed the notion that the overlapping searches could complicate the hunt for new directors at the laboratories. Mike Anastasio will retire from Los Alamos National Laboratory June 1, while George Miller will leave Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Oct. 1. “Neither search is going to be hurt or slowed down by the other going on at the same time,” Darling said on the sidelines of a National Academy of Sciences meeting at Lawrence Livermore yesterday, adding: “We view the fact that these are happening in sequence to be very positive. We’ve already been looking around the country for candidates for one lab director, and we have a large number. We’ll come to Livermore, we’ll talk with the staff and others
about what criteria they are seeking. We see it as a very positive thing.”
As part of the team that manages both laboratories, the University of California has the responsibility for choosing the laboratory directors at the institutions. Norm Pattiz, who chairs the Board of Governors for both labs, is heading up the searches, and while officials with knowledge of the effort have said that the Los Alamos search committee is not close to naming a new director and is still examining a relatively large pool of candidates, Darling said that the search committee for the Livermore search has not been formed. But he dismissed the notion that the searches were behind schedule. “We’re right on the schedule we laid out at the beginning of the process and we informed NNSA about,” Darling said. The candidate pool for both positions is likely to include LANL weapons program chief Charles McMillan, Livermore weapons chief Bruce Goodwin and Nevada National Security Site director Stephen Younger.

There will be enough credible candidates to go around. And probably enough incredible ones, too.
Your resume must include the following (with no deviations) to be seriously considered for either the LANL or LLNL Director positions:
1) Have worked at DOE
Translation: Was employed by DOE during the LANL/LLNL transition; where LANL/LLNL went from being managed by the esteemed University of California (for $10 million @ year) to being mismanaged by the present day (hugely expensive - $50 million + @ year) sovereign construction country of Bechtel.
Please prepare your documentation to reflect on your loyalty, respect, and admiration for Bechtel 'er I mean NNSA . . .
NOTE to Editor: But aren't they actually the same company and/or organization - sure seem to have the same talking faces?!
Also be prepared to demonstrate your willingness to disregard (essentially throw out) all of the previously promised University of California retiree benefits when requested by those venerated managers on your interview team (whose loyalty unquestionably resides with Bechtel and the almighty dollar). Be cognizant that any demonstrated patriotic fervor may constitute dismissal from this process.
2) Additionally, you must have absolutely no previous scientific weapons experience; however, a demonstrated background as an attorney with a strong emphasis in promulgating meaningless safety concerns (leading to bureaucratic slowdowns and work stoppages) will definitely add positive points to the applicant's resume! A "leg up" so to speak . . .
3) All other resume entries actually have no meaning and, if listed, will only serve to prolong the proceedings.
Finally, if you don't meet the requirements listed in #1 & #2 above, don't bother to apply.
Thanks for your interest and have a good day!
It's official. The LLNL Director position will be the consolation prize for the short list of 3.
Bin Laden is finally dead...
... HURRAAAH!
See the vows in London last week? You must be from the royal line to become ruler. Mike to Charlie to Brett. That is the way it will be and others need not be considered by UC.

I am still appalled that Bret is the ADW for W-Division and X-Division. I knew Bret at Livermore as an upstart Engineer. He was a very "disappointing" engineer during his career at Livermore. Is this manager/engineer the best that Livermore had to offer? To imagine this person will apparently rise to the PADNWP is ghastly.
He was a very "disappointing" engineer during his career at Livermore.
What a coincidence.....I've been a "very disappointing" engineer during my tenure at Livermore.....should I apply?
"He was a very disappointing engineer during his career at Livermore."
I also had the opportunity to work with BK during his tenure at LLNL. He was a real professional, no-nonsense leader who produced real results.
I have no first-hand insight into his activities at LANL. However, I know from working with him at LLNL that if you weren't pulling your weight, you wouldn't do well working for BK.
These California guys love sycophants. You should sign your real name, "May 21, 2011 6:09 PM", You could go far.
