I think it is pretty naive to think that some cuts one way or other will not coming to the labs.

I can see it going either way. On the one hand, the labs are so bloated and inefficient that DOGE can easily cut 50% and likely see a significant increase in productivity, assuming they can force cuts to all of the positions created over the last 30 years that have the sole purpose of simply standing in the way of work. On the other hand, it's precisely these "make work" positions that seem to have the most political support from representatives wanting to bring home the bacon. Only time will tell for certain what happens.
