WTF Is DOGE Doing in Department in Charge of Nuclear Weapons?

The Department of Energy on Friday tried to clarify why one of Elon Musk’s DOGE underlings was granted access to the department’s I.T. systems despite opposition from its general counsel and cybersecurity offices.

CNN reports that Luke Farritor, 23, whose previous work experience consists of an internship at Musk’s company SpaceX was granted access by Energy Secretary Chris Wright Wednesday. The department’s legal counsel and chief information offices, which govern I.T. and cybersecurity, “said this is a bad idea,” according to a source who spoke with CNN, given that Farritor hadn’t received a standard background check.

Seems like we are still in denial at LANL about coming efficiency and policy changes. I see other labs like PNNL and LLNL making rapid readjustments, but business here is humming along just like it always has, with our Department of Motor Vehicles mentality and structure. The director sent out a lab-wide email this week essentially saying, "don't worry about all of these OMB memos and executive orders, most of it doesn't apply to us. We are contractors." I have a feeling reality is going to collide with the insular attitude on the hill like a freight train hitting a mountain. Even Google, perhaps the wokest of all companies, said they are complying as federal contractors.

The Director also said that LANL has few people working from home so again none this doge stuff matters to LANL. Sure officially we only have a few working from home but the reality is we have lots of people that simply do not show up to work. We are suppose to be on the 9/80, yet every Friday I would guess 1/4 or less of the people show up. Not to very mention few are working the 9 hours of the 9/80. This is on top of the fact that some people seem to only show up once or twice a week for few hours. Sure I can find a few people who work for home a lot that are very productive and will respond to emails or calls, but there are more than 50% who are not very productive at all and you can never get hold them. However all the people I know who are coming in 8 hours day are productive. Maybe we are contractors so none of this matters but I would guess even contractors are going to start feeling some pressure.

Of course I can only speak about my area of the lab I would assume the manufacturing part if run differently.

I forget which lab director said when asked "how many people work at LANL" and he said "about half" Was that Hecker?

A half seems pretty harsh. It is a very weird place and in my building and on any one day about 33-40% of the offices have people in them. Fridays 5-15% I would presume some are on travel, vacation, and so on. After Covid, there ware a huge drop off.

However compared to government organization I would guess LANL is 10 times more efficient

5:15, no, that was Agnew. A third would be generous these days.

The previous comments blow me away as they fail to address the issue. The issue is that THIS IS NOT NORMAL. Don't you all understand? A 23 year old with no prior experience and no training in government employee ethics and rules on classified/sensitive information is allowed free access to sensitive information. Again - assuming you are past or present lab employees, you of all people should understand the danger of this access! Speak out!

Do not mees with a battalion of asbergers kids with unlimited energy, strawberry poptarts . redbull and air mattresses/sleeping bags.

Proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

Haha.. Not a joking matter. This is OUR country that we are talking about. And, it is not just people in the USA that are seeing what is happening. Our allies and enemies are also watching.

If I remember correctly, LANL was a bastion of conservative republican values. So stop bitching you voted Trump and the rest of the losers into office. As they say, payback is a bitch.

I wonder what percentage of LANL voted for Trump……just sayin.

“was” is the operative word here. Republicans don’t have any “values” anymore that’s for sure. They want nothing more than to burn it all down.

“Training in government employee ethics” lolol are you joking?

So what thathe is 23, if he is competent, and he is likely more competent than a lot of the dead wood at the labs, his “experience” has no bearing. It sounds like you are jealous, to be honest.

My guess is you are suffering from the new Elon Musk Derangement Syndrome . Quick, sell your Tesla because he has differing opinions. Is that what you learned in your training?

No one should fear a broad review of spending when the country has a nearly $2T budget deficit and $37T debt, with $10T added in the past five years. But Elon is a Nazi! Country full of easily manipulated dumbasses.

So you are afraid of young intelligent people scanning the books, but not about potential insolvency? Got it.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
