So the super committee failed. It should mean big cuts for defense. Now the question is whether this includes NNSA and DOE. Anyone know anything?

Secretary of Defense (Leon Panetta) indicated that the ground-leg of the Triad would be eliminated if the across the board cuts occur. Impact to both Labs (the important ones, not Sandia) would be about the same.
Scooby deleted several insightful comments on this thread simply because they violated his rule about not commenting on a request for a new post before it is posted by him, even if it takes him several days to get around to it. Too bad. He is his own worst enemy (and ours). Liberals always like making the "right" behavior compulsory.

Not that being a liberal is a bad thing, but on this shallow evidence you claim some knowledge of Scooby's political leanings?
As to the general point, there appear to be no lack of non-libertarian conservatives who are hoping to make some sort of 'right' behavior compulsory.
By definition
Liberals are "mommies".
Conservatives are "loners".
Mommies know best and tell everyone what to do.
Loners listen to no one.
Should be on different planets. Mars, Venus?
Basically, "Conservatives" fear the future and change. They fought against women's voting rights, civil rights, and any other movment that wanted to change the status quote.
Unless you create a time machine, we are not going back to the 1850s slavery or "separate but equal" Jim Crow 1950s.
This country is a better country than it was in its past, and will be a better country in the furute than it is now.

By that I assume you mean requiring people to obey the law. What insensitivity!

If only. Then the moderates among us could actually get something done.
Hey Nov 22nd 11:21PM:
I agree it was insighful but I got tired of CUT & PASTing comments where they belong. I have a life and the BLOG keeping is a free service.
I value your input but also value my time. Your comment is so insightful that I am sure you will be able to make it again under the post now that it is published.
I MEAN NOV 22ND, 9:21pm!

Well at least you made an ass out of yourself.
Is it possible for someone to actually comment on the Supercommittee failure and its possible impact on the labs? I have been wondering this but have little insight. This unenlightened arguments between some liberal and conservatives is not on topic. Does anyone with a little maturity know anything on this topic (the supercommittee failure, not the childish back and forth)? This event could have grave importance for the future of the labs.
The supercommittee failure means nothing and was expected by anyone with any knowledge of Washington politics. No "automatic" cuts can occur before 2013, conveniently after the election. Before that, Congress can just vote to rescind the "trigger" provisions. Obama's pledge to veto any such attempt is just election-year smoke. Spend your time worrying about something that might actually happen.

Why doesn't your mommy change your diaper and let you down from your baby chair so you can comment on the subject yourself? Wah, wah, wah....
The graph at this link
Washington Post article
will show why the 'automatic' cuts will likely be legislated away.
Actually, liberals have spent the last 50 years, maybe more, trying to take away the civil rights of Americans. For example, their religious intolerance is numbing. Google the persecution of Christians in America by the hateful "politically correct." America was founded to get away from that kind of bigotry. Liberals are angry that they can't delete the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights but they keep trying.
As to inantiy.
The supercommittee member do not concern themselves with the welfare of the elements of the triad or any other part of the national fabric. They are concerned with their own egotistical view, at the expense of necessary compromise for the general welfare.
Failures all.

Oops, the Professor is back. Anyway, if you think we ought to pay our legislators more money, you are a fool.

"Actually", 'conservative' George Wallace certainly had the civil liberties of African-Americans at heart when he stood in the doorway at the University of Alabama.

"Actually", that was 48 1/2 years ago. I think you are pushing your point a little too far.
Latest memo from management at LANL indicates that the cuts to cover for the $200 million weapons shortfall are about to hit the lab.
What timing! Los Alamos County was AGAIN recently listed as among the top per capita income locations in the country. Due to several years of recent stability at the lab, housing prices in the county had just started to recover. Now come the layoffs.

The statistic is not based on current LANL employees. It is based on thousands of LANL/UC retirees with 35+ years of service and six-figure incomes due to UC pensions and good investment income. If real estate ownership were included, the figures would be much higher for these owners of 400k homes whose mortgages are paid off.

You should have sold last year. This news of lab cuts is going to quickly put a damper on the Hill housing market.
Someone said that a few houses sold for near record high prices recently. Is it true that several of the highest real estate deals in Los Alamos County history involved top Lab managers? If so, sure looks like someone was fiddling while the empire's capital was burning.

Of course it is. No one living in Los Alamos has as much money to spend as the Bechtel Boys.
I'm hearing that the stalemate in Congress will likely continue and the drastic Super Committee cuts that came from the committee's failure WILL be implemented. These cuts will be very hard on defense and the NNSA weapon labs.
The cuts start in Jan 2013 but actions to mitigate their effect through staffing reductions will probably begin by late next summer or the fall. Plan on about a 10% RIF to handle the first round of cuts with additional RIFs in the succeeding years. It will be very ugly.
