From a former employee

As a former employee, here are a few observations/comments: - NNSA needs to go. - Get rid of NIF, too expensive and it's going nowhere - DOE should restructure LLNL to be more like LBNL. Too expensive to maintain Sandia and LLNL. LLNL and LANL can't continue to do duplicate work. - Sandia should close all operations in Livermore. - LLNL can't compete with Bay Area's tech companies in terms of employee retention. How many software engineers leave LLNL every year? Yes, LLNL employees are highly qualified and competent, but not feasible to maintain current number of employees/salaries/cost of living in CA/pensions/etc...

Someone actually has their eyes open. I'm impressed.

I totally agree! Sandia in Livermore should be closed and abandoned!

Impressive succinct assessment of the situation.

Silly. Yes NNSA needs to go. NIF is the only experimental facility that has a chance of challenging assumptions and approximations (DAHRT---really??). UGTS aren't coming back, and stockpile stewardship is about the workforce, not about LEPS and codes that interpolate UGTS. LLNL loses to local tech companies but many more stay for the mission.

Sandia in Livermore needs to be shut down

Whoever the "former employee" is, he/she is truly a moron and this blog is moronic !

If people's opinions and many facts about LLNL, LANL , LLNS and LANS bothers you then leave and don't come back.

I agree with most of this former employee's comments, especially that LLNL should become more like LBNL. The future is in energy efficiency and other civilian sciences. And, yes, NIF is too expensive and going nowhere. I might give it to the Office of Science or another landlord and let the astrophysicists, geophysicists and others see what science they could get out of it before abandoning it, but I agree with the general direction of the comment. Nice post. Lots of food for serious thought.

No reason for two LBNLs, just like no reason for two LANLs. LLNL is outdated, tired, unfunded, irrelevant, and redundant. Time to go.

The accumulative funding cuts coming out of yearly sequestrations will "solve" the NNSA lab problems.

It won't be pretty, though. All the DOE labs, including those of NNSA, will be much smaller. And, yes, some of the national labs may not survive the continous budget cutting process.

Actually we are leaner and meaner because we got rid of the "former employee" who was sucking down a big salary and producing very little. If we could get rid of a few more, maybe the younger employees who support world class science and engineering like NIF might have half a chance at LLNL !

The only reason NIF would qualify as world class science is because they are actually doing black hole simulations with it. Given enough funding it will even suck down the entire US Treasury, and all that it will give back in return is a giant holographic belch when it's done (at the event horizon).
