22 LANL people RIFed yesterday?

Does anybody have any scoop on the 22 LANL people RIFed yesterday?

July 25, 2014 at 7:14 AM

One possible clue is that about two months ago our Maintenance Manager at TA-55 indicated that they had a severe shortfall in funding, were ending some Code (e.g. NFPA) required maintenance, and were going to RIF folks. Maintenance folks are always the first RIFed, management (i.e. Essential Personnel) are pardoned.

I don't know about 22 people, but I know at least one person who got RIFfed on July 24.

I heard the budget for LANL next year is going down by 10-15%. Not sure what is going to happen but I am hearing some managers are starting to really worry.

Don't know where 9:41 PM got the numbers from, but the budget shortfall for LANL for next year that has been passed around is closer to a 20-25% cut.

congress hasn't come up with a budget yet and you predict a shortfall. Either you are really god with tealeaves or the other leaves. Just hope you don't get tested

Budget down by 15% next year... and staff have been told FTE costs (fully burdened labor rates) will be increasing by 6%. Securing that funding for next year is going to be difficult as budgets for projects are drained to cover for more overhead functions.

Charlie inherited a budget of just under 2.2B from Mike, and it has steadily eroded at the rate of about 200M per year. While the current year has not yet closed, indications are that it may be a up a tad from last year. Thus, if the lab is presently slated to loose 300-400M next year, it depends on what total is used to calculate the percent cut.

No matter how you want to do the math, if it stays this way, the absolute loss in the annual budget is looking to be about 800M under Charlie.

15 staff (8 LANS and 7 contractors) have just been let go due to budget reductions from LANL's SAFE division (safeguards and security not the protective force) just recently. I hear the LANS staff were escorted off site and the contractors were given a termination date.

LLNS "sister lab" LANS gives remaining
LANS staff a low morale "booster shot".
Were lay offs in the UC days handled
this way too?

LANL is the new Rocky Flats and LANS was hired as the "shut-down" crew. These things must be done carefully, bit by bit. Seen in that respect, Charlie "GQ" McMillan is doing a great job of dismantling what is left.
