No doubt. From what I hear the short term hiring outlook at the lab is pretty good. What will happen when the stimulus money runs out is anyones guessthough. Hopefully the WFO process will have been streamlined by then.

How about quoting the whole paragraph.

5% will be hired as long as long as the net loss is 5% to ensure they get the PBI, otherwise known as the money.

And there you have it 5% in and 5 % out so that's how many people to be laid off in 2010 = 325. I'd say that's about how many are going to retire between June and December of this year. What they are going to do with these inexpereinced people I have no clue. I hope they don't think they're coming to paradise. We do know they'll be "at will" used and abused and then shown the gate when their services are no longer needed. It the new way of the new world and global economy. It's not all good and will not be , ever.
No gain but a great loss of 350 once dedicated patriot employees who knew how to get a job done on time without a mountain of BS obstacles in their way. Thank God we didn't have all this PC ES&H ISSM garbage in our way during star wars and the cold war era or you'd all be speaking Russian. The sad news is the new way of political correctness with the enemy is going to further destroy America leaving it vulnerable to attacks from within. Sorry to see 100's of years of democracy go down the tubes.
Poster 4:59 PM has it right. The reason LLNS have announced they are "hiring" at a 5% rate is because they hope to get ride of about 5% of the current staff.
The new hires cost a lot less and don't have the costly benefits associated with the longer term staff. It's called "work force restructuring" and you are going to see a lot of it in the future. None of this applies to the upper management chain, however.

I've seen article like this before in various science magazines. I'm not sure were these editors get this idea, because you are NOT going to see 5% grow in the size of the scientific staff at LLNL during this next year. No way, no how!

What "science magazines". Can you name one (other than the one posted)?
LLNL's is going down the toilet since the LLNS take over encouraged by DOE and NNSA. A big mistake they'll never never recover from. The biggest blunder is putting all their eggs in one basket, NIF.
IFF the story is true, congrats to any real workers that get hired.
To the original poster, it's bad form to rant like that. Show a little maturity.

Typical naysayer. I read your rants here day in and day out. I find it amusing that you describe my post as a "rant" while you and your fellow naysayers epitomize the meaning of the word (yell and scream in an impassioned way"). Do I need to post each and every example for you? All I did was post an article excerpt from a respected technical publication and posit the response which would follow.I nailed it didn't I? Thanks for making my point.

Are you EBA? I,personally, no of nobody who is EBA. I have more work than I have ever had and I am totally over-subscribed.Is your resume in order?
I know of at least 2 in RHWM who were told that they would be put on EBA status in February.

So you still don't know anybody who is actually EBA. Can anybody on this blog tell us where all of the supposed EBA folks are hiding? I mean, isn't the end near? Isn't there supposed to be a gigantic layoff and isn't the Lab going to be shut down. According to some, we should have lost several thousand employees by now. Less guess work and conjecture, more FACTS.

We used to have more than 10,000 people working here.
Now I see the number is 6500,
and I think that includes all the Bectel managers.
What was the work force when LLNS took over, and we were promised that "Nothing will change on October 1"
(Of course, they never said anything about right after that!)
I can name 3 EBA's that are partial or total. They do exist! Most directorates I would guess have always had a few people in transition.
I also know of 2 people who were given 30-90 days of EBA and then were told they would be shown the door if they could not find a new project.
EBAs are nothing new and it adds flexibility for the staff. As WFO can be cyclic and sometimes beyond our control, it is a needed mechanism to hold on to staff. Why is this a big deal?

Must be some sort of manager hired by LLNS to put a positive spin on what LLNL is today. Got news for you. It isn't going to happen simply because LLNL is slowly but surely turning into nothing worth DOE and NNSA to run and NIF is just a long shot far from ever being part of todays national independence and energy crisis solution. Once again we've put all the eggs in the wrong basket. The American's tax payers dollars could have been used to build solar arrays across the entire face of the desert lands, geothermal plants, wind power plants and sea wave power plants. Heck we could've built nuclear power plants off shore like those used on our Naval aircraft carries and be far ahead of the game. But what did we do? Well, the big oil companies dropped the fuel prices at the pump to less then $3.00 and now everyone is pacified and some haven't taken note it's on the climb again. What a problem orientate focused nation we are, hah? It's amazing how soon all the crimes committed against the people have been forgotten, even those people like Hugo Chavez who makes billions of dollars off U.S. fuel sales and then funnels those funds to strengthen the very enemy we are at war with.

Agreed, EBA's are nothing new. To some, just the mention of the word portends the demise of the lab. I remember one individual (who still frequents this blog) claimed the lab work force would be down to 4,000 by now. All of the hypothesizing and gesticulating has left me skeptical of the validity of the claims which purport to be fact.
This blog is frequently full of lies and rumors. Listen to the official news sources you can trust at sites run by LLNS and NNSA. They have the real story.

True, but the slide from the "used to have more than 10,000 people" to today's number did occur in just the last two years.
BTW, just how many Bechtel managers do you think are here? The total number of LLNS parent company personnel including managers is less than 60 people total. Lot of UC blood still running things here, including GM.
