Knapp's Continuing "Tax Gross-ups"

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/regmeet/jul07/c4.pdf

Bret Knapp continues to receive his "perk extensions". While all of this is good and well, what get's me is Anastasio's efforts to continue to approve/support Knapp to "offset any adverse tax consequences" of these perks". This is literally nothing more than a "perk on top of a perk". We are effectively giving these guys extra money on top of the perks to ensure it covers any and all of the extra taxes on this money!

Just read that UC PDF. This is OUTRAGEOUS!

While the employees deal with capped salaries, both in the previous few years and many years out into the future (thanks, Dr. Chu!), the LANS upper management team lives it up with all sorts of special perks. The extra special perks that Anastasio's little boy, Brett Knapp, gets in this document are truly sickening.

The NNSA and LANS should be ashamed of themselves, but they don't do shame, do they?

I'm sure the rest of the Lab Senior Management are also receiving "TAX FREE" bonuses and benefits. You also have to wonder if they are also receiving "TAX FREE" salaries. Notice there is no mention of the actual amount of the tax gross-up; how does the U.S. government (aka taxpayers) tolerate paying these guys taxes?

Top that off with 30k per year so he and his family can travel back and forth to NM. Also the payment of health insurance for his family in California. The good old boy network is alive and well while the rest of us take it in the shorts......

Stop whining, it doesn't become you. Corporate bosses all over the country are getting the same perks or better. The appropriate professional response is 1) suck it up and resolve to become more irreplaceable, or 2) take your undervalues services to someone who appreciates them more. Wake up. You aren't in UC anymore.

Get ready to be truly sickened.

Brett Knapp will likely take over Charlie McMillan's PAD position in the Weapons Directorate once McMillian gets "crowned" by the LANS Board as the next LANL Director.

I was sickened the first time I had to deal with Mcmillan in early 2007 at LANL. His willingness to ignore established rules, favor his LLNL cronies over LANL interests, and above all, to establish his dominance over all of his new LANL colleagues, was indeed sickening. One of the primary reasons I retired from LANL some months later. I couldn't stand the idea of being under his "rule" for any longer. He is the very definition of "self-absorbed."

Let's review Knapp's "accomplishments" during the past 5-years at LANL.

Bret Knapp split ESA-Division into W-Division and WT-Division. Knapp's detailed explanation was that ESA-Division was "too large". He then merged W-Division and WT-Division into the old LANL WX-Division and named it W-Division. Knapp's detailed explanation was "to get these two Divisions to cooperate with each together".

Anastasio then gave Knapp X-Division which Knapp rapidly split into XTA-Division and XCP-Divisions. Knapp's detailed explanation was that X-Division "was too large". I understand that Knapp has plans to merge these two Divisions and call it X-Division. Knapp's detailed explanation for this merger was to "get these two Divisions to cooperate with each together".

I am unaware of anything else that Knapp has accomplished in the U.S. nuclear weapon program during the past 5-years other than merge, split, and merge Divisions.

The labs have had their share of both talented leaders and rough pretenders. Lawrence, May, Haussman, Kukuck, Mara contrasted with Campbell, Moses, Clough, Russo, Wood.

Knapp learned his management toolkit from Clough. Hurt people and they will fear you.

He is perhaps the best example of the labs not attracting, developing or retaining the best and the brightest. 2nd rate credentials, poorly formed.

Compare Knapp to Mara. Much is lost between these two generations.

But then consider the long parade of DOE stumblebums compared to early AEC leaders. There is the farce.

X was split into XTD and XCP Divisions.

Bingo. Knapp would never hire anyone who can top his 2nd (actually 3rd) rate credentials. Furthermore, I can think of several individuals who Knapp destroyed because they would challenge his rudimentary knowledge of weapons. To compare Knapp to Bob Clough is a "joke".

Knapp reminds me of Sid Phillips in Toy Story. You remember, the disturbed, hyperactive, antagonistic 10-year boy. Unfortunately, we are playing role of all his toys.

The hardest thing to understand about the rapid rise of Brett Knapp and the issuing of his "special perks" by the LANS Board is why?

What makes this kid so valuable to LANS? His credentials are completely under-whelming (Masters from Cal State).

What is it that they see in this guy? If you are going to pick somebody to groom for future leadership positions, why in the world would anyone pick this guy? It makes no sense.

If you are depending on someone below you to do things that will make you lots of money, loyalty is everything. Competency is secondary. Employee happiness is tertiary.

Seriously.... how convenient that you can post this trash anonymously. Look at yourselves and ask what you have contributed, do you earn your salary, and what is your experience? I myself have been employed well over 30 years and most often I see people who have their own agenda, most impressed with themselves and do not put in a full days work. Mind your own business, clean your own house.
