I was one of those who were laid off "unofficially" on monday. I guess I could say the best thing about it is I don't have to worry anymore, its over and done. What really got to me was the fact that I was told not to come in and get my personal belongings, Pictures etc. as someone would gather them for me. That was just wrong, but I can see their side of it. But I would have happily come in under escort and said goodbye to my friends and gather my things if the option would have been presented to me. I put alot of effort into this job, trying to get things done more effectively and efficiently which has always paid off for me when I worked on the outside, hence the fact that on the outside I have never been laid off in 20 years of working. But let me tell you, here it doesn't matter what you know, what other training you have, as long as you have seniority in skilled crafts you will stay no matter how ineffective or narrow your training is. Lab management is totally blind to what the real need is here and the value of these younger employees that were let go. Oh well the best and the brightest? what a joke. Oh yes one last thing, thanks UPTE for nothing.

who are you? Now that they have hosed you can you reveal your identity? Some of us may know you.
"seniority in skilled crafts" or for that matter in any classification means nothing. ULM is working the "unit" and "who's in them", and their "pecking order" so as to keep who they want. Again, seniority and SKA's are used to what ever yields "their" needs. We are all "at will" and that's the way it works. There is NO security...unless you're on the side of the fence making the rules and guess who that is.
It works like this. Today you have a job and by tomorrow you may not. Be prepared at all times to have your life come to an end. It's the only way you are ever going to make it at LLNL.
I had the pleasure and honor to know and work with 5 of the 9 highly skilled crafts that were released on Monday. The LLNS management is making a big mistake. These were valuable and dedicated employees.
Good luck to all 9 Plant Engineering skilled crafts. You will be missed.
Thanks to the unions, seniority is the basis for layoffs for trade workman. This is one of those things that gives unions a badname.
Well tomorrow is our day in this state of affairs what a mess I thought this would be a great place to work all I can say is the mess is only going to get worse plan your exits and move on to greener pastures as this one is gone.
I'm glad I retired in 95 and not a part of the l l c mess
I left the Lab in 2006 when I saw this coming. But, be prepared for the corportae world outside the old Lab......everybody is at will and I have seen people dismissed at a moments notice at my new, "for profit" company. I also pine for the job security we thought we had at the Lab in the 80s and 90s. I thought I would retire from there. But those days are gone my friends. The best you can do is hold your head up and move on with your lives. If it's any consolation, I did manage to bump my salary by more than 25%! It wasn't easy for me to move on, but am glad I did and didn't waste any of my life the last 2 years in the Lab's quagmire. It is very sad.....but even sadder if you give them anymore of your lives.
