How many jobs have you applied for?
I just got off the phone with a head hunter. He informed me of several jobs (much longer commute) in the area. The problem is he says the lab tends to pay its people very well and it's hard to match the salary, much less get more. So, what kind of luck are you having - or are you just riding out the storm?

Riding out the storm while looking for a job too. You can forget more pay. It will probably be for about 50% less. However, it is what it is and YOU have no control. As it has been said many times before. LLNL is dead. Now get a move on and forget this joint. Most likely you will lose everything you had and most of your dreams but you have to keep your head above water and more on. The more you think about it the more ULM likes it and the thoughts will eventually kill you. Save those thoughts for another day after you are settle in with your new life. We are wasting out time and efforts things that we can save our jobs or the lab. NNSA and the President DO NOT want it saved. The mission is over and the future lies in China's hands, not ours. They will build our bridges, our ships, and 99.9 % of all the good you will need on a daily basis. They'll even be making the solar panels that'll keep the lights on the good old USA. Global economics is a wonder money maker. for the rich.
I really doubt the 50%. Salaries in the bay area remain fairly strong...the biggest cut for an offer I received was 20% for southern California, which is not possible for me due to family.
I've herd tons of people fleeing the current incarnation of bio have found jobs and most pay more....sure bio has always been under paid.
LLNL is not dead. Nor will it die. Every time I read that I see an agenda. And it isn't a nice one.
If you're doing this to make people feel miserable, get a life. If you really believe it, seek counseling please, your grip on reality is extremely suspect.
As for myself, I haven't applied for any outside jobs yet. That could change at any time depending on the circumstances.
I know several scientists who have recently snagged jobs outside of the lab. The pay has been comparable to what they make here but in many cases they are moving to areas that have lower living costs so they actually came out ahead.
In the old days it was hard to beat the pay at LLNL. That is no longer true. The pay scales at LLNL for scientific work have not kept up with what is available outside of this lab. Over the next few years I wouldn't be surprise to see the LLNL pay scales fall significantly behind those of other high tech employers.

A typical lab-cultured response. This is yet another reason why I won't miss LLNL.

Then I have two questions for you.
1) What do you think it will become and why is there a need for LLNL besides homeland security which may also be dead once we get rid of GWB.
2) What do you think the agenda is? Is there an agenda or is this a way for people to deal with an organization that has no loyalty to its employees.
When they first announced the FX layoff, I put my resume out and within a week was offered a job with less work for 12% more pay. Needless to say, I took it. I still receive calls and emails daily offering me more money but I think I will stay put for now. I think a lot depends on your position. The Lab overpays in some areas and underpays in others. The sad thing is the areas they underpay are the areas where they could really use some good people.
Good technicians, machinists, welders, computer scientists, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, etc., can find jobs elsewhere that match or exceed the pay at LLNL. Some good areas to check out are the oil service industry and the mining industry. Some of the salaries being doled out in these industries are unreal and the demand for skilled staff in these industries is very high. Not sure about demand for physicists, though. That one could be tough.
I have applied for at least twenty different jobs, plus anything I see that my friends could fill I forward it to them. There a a lot of jobs open. I'm going to take a different job even if I avoid layoff - layoffs. The individual that is in denial of the Lab's death should stand back and smell the stench! I was at the Lab when it was a great place to work, and I assure you, what was died. I've already had two interviews, and they both asked why I want to leave. I just tell them it's time for a change, and the budget gets cut every year - they seem to know the change in the Lab has been a disaster.
When this is all over, NNSA will be left with a rotten shell of what was once was a great lab.
