NIF better funded in budget than LANSCE

Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 8:00 pm (Updated: March 22, 8:00 pm)
When President Barack Obama sent his FY2015 budget to Congress, it turned out to be bad news for the Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Center, which is part of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center.
Through the past two decades, the Lujan Center has been operated through a partnership between the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Office of Basic Energy Sciences.
Obama’s budget request cut $10 million in funding for the operational costs of the Lujan Center.
This is what the budget request said.
“The BES operations of the Lujan Neutron Scattering Center will cease and funding is requested for safe storage of facility components”. For well over a decade, the Lujan Center at LANSCE has been an international center of excellence and innovation for basic and applied research in neutron scattering and fundamental nuclear physics,” the budget statement said.

A coworker went out there ten years ago to do some tests, and it was surprisingly easy to schedule them - meaning, they were highly under-subscribed. There just isn't much call for LANSCE users, I guess, so its time to cut expenses. The future for NIF may look similar.

Bright and shiny new toy at ORNL called SNS. Better neutrons, perhaps? Or at least the Tennessee neutrons have an Office of Science paternity?

Maybe it happened and we all just missed it, but SNS has not sent radiation out the door with workers. LANSCE had that event last year and the investigation report was harsh about the culture. Maybe it is time to close the doors and move on.

Yeah, one radiation leak should result in shutting down a multi-million dollar facility, because what? You are scared? You want revenge? You are clueless? All of the above.

First of all the Lujan center is not LANSCE. Not sure if the radiation leak had anything to do with this but it sure did not help. It could be that they will just get more bang for their buck with SNS. I heard Argonne also had one of their facilities cut.

Not to worry, LANL will make up any LANSCE losses by bringing in more WFO. Be happy!
