Walp, Duran and Montano

Walp and Duran aren't letting it go, aided by Montano. There was always much more to this than appeared publicly, including the canning of some very competent and experienced LANL managers who did not deserve it, and not those named in the story.

The story in the NM newspaper is not much of a big deal. However the lead on POGO about the same issues could become a first class headache for LANL for years to come.

There is much more to this story, I was there during that time. I hope that the investigation continues, much more to come on this one....

So glad that someone is listening, this needs to be investigated thoroughly. It will make a great movie and or book. There are a lot of behind the the scenes here, cover ups (maybe). The LA Police did a shoddy job of investigating the so called suicide, this could be big in the on-going history of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Come on, there is absoutly nothing to this, never was. Other people where their as well.

No one so far on this thread has the real story. Burick is just a sad case who held everything inside, even with his wife and friends. But Walp and Duran went way beyond their authority and were fired for it immediately, as they should have been. They were not hired as "cops," but security investigators. The "cop" function was not left to real cops, as it should have been. The folks who fired them were then fired for seeming to have shut down an investigation that should never have been started by LANL personnel in the first place. The entire process was a function of top management (UC), in a panic over Congressional investigations, having already decided who was going to be let go (Browne) and trying to gain control of unexpected events by letting the new guy (Nanos) do all the dirty work, which, as he showed later, he was all too willing to do. Very sad for the consummate professionals with many decades of national service who had to take the hit.

10:09 got it exactly right. Montano et al. were never players of any real significance. I was there too along with thousands of other workers. It is pathetic to see this mustang story rehashed again so that losers and malcontents can get another 15 minutes in the spotlight from media sources who are all to eager to publish nonsense.

I doubt Walp, Doran, and Montano believe any of this themselves, but are pushing this for some more attention or money.

I knew and worked with Walp during the short time he was at LANL. No evidence of higher education, just a cop's "get the perp" mentality. Totally unsuited to a national laboratory environment, especially when LANL was still under UC. Walp was a prior Commissioner of the PA State Police before joining LANL. Way over-qualified for some other job, but not the one he was given.

Stan Busboom convinced Joe Salgado to hire Walp, who then hired Doran. Salgado was an ex-cop and former prosecutor. The premise of these hires was totally misguided and had to do with property inventory and loss. In the end, the reputational and financial fallout, including firings and Congressional hearings and buyouts evidenced just how much damage a small group of people in the wrong positions can do at a large institution such as Los Alamos.

Really?

I know LANL is messed up managerially in a number of ways, but whacking people? Hiring assassins? Setting up crime scenes? Someone's been watching too many bad movies.

This is pathetic drivel.

Montano is an arrogant egomaniac with an overly high opinion of himself and his credentials. MOVE ON CHUCK, GET A LIFE!

What I want to know is how much money Chuck Montano got on his settlement with LANL. Chuck doesn't want to talk about that does that does he. Now that is a crime!

Knowing Montano it was not very much because if it was he would go screaming all over the place how much he got and he is vindicated. Since he does not say a word about it the amount must put him in a bad light.

I have no idea what this poster is saying. No such actions occurred or were alleged by anyone. But quite a few posters here obviously know what went on and are reporting it accurately.

Nothing went on, so why are we talking about this?

The actions of Walp, Duran, and LANL management have been accurately reported above, by people who were there. February 3, 2016 at 10:09 PM, February 4, 2016 at 10:10 PM, and February 5, 2016 at 6:28 AM report precisely what I too observed. To say that none of this happened is just ignorant, or worse.

Oh he got alot! Enough to build a brand new cabin in Northern NM. Ask him about it.

Chuck's problem is that he has a HUGE inferiority complex. He had a tough time working at LANL with his accounting degree from a small college working amongst the highest educated folks in the country from prestigious accredited Universities.

Can you say "total BS"

Back in February of 2012 the Santa Fe Reporter ran an interesting story revisiting the Ski Hill death (suicide?) of LANL Deputy Director Richard Burick. Interesting case. You can find it here:

http://www.sfreporter.com/santafe/article-6571-who-killed-richard-burick.html

Like many events, the true nature of what happened may never be fully known. Once Director John Browne was removed, the real terror started at LANL with the arrival of former navy Adm. Pete Nanos.

Still a little off-normal there, bucko. Get a clue.

From the Santa Fe Reporter: “The lab wastes multi-billions of taxpayer dollars, and nobody seems to care,” Doran says. “They flush money like it’s toilet paper. "

This does confirm what is being said about Doran and Walp in this thread. No ability to understand what the Lab does, nor any evidence of logical thinking. They recall several cases of petty theft at a complex $2 billion enterprise. From here, they make a logical leap that the entire two billion a year is wasted.

Sure, it's bad that among the 10,000+ workers there were a few bad apples. But there was no culture of corruption or embezzlement. The vast majority of the workers were honest, dedicated people, working to defend this nation. To assert that all of them were stealing billions of taxpayer dollars is not only false it is an outrageous slander.

"The lab’s operators knew that if the Department of Energy discovered the magnitude of the situation—and the fact that they had been looking the other way—they could lose their multi-billion dollar contract to run the facility."

More misunderstanding, mischaracterization and BS. The "operators" were University of California. Their fee for running LANL was a symbolic $8 million/year. If you figure in that UC provided very generous pension benefits to the lab employees without taking any contributions for many years, the taxpayers were getting an amazing deal.

Fast forward 15 years. The contract change did not fix the petty thefts (Beth Sellers anyone?). The new contractor fee is almost 10 times more. The free pension benefits from UC are gone. The workforce is demoralized and the best and brightest have been leaving in droves. Do Doran and Walp realize that they caused much more harm to this nation that the woman who embezzled $1,800?

Can they realize this?

I thought the parallel between these cops and Inspector Cluseau was actually right on. They came in, understood nothing, and in the process of "interrogations" caused utter devastation. And now they scream "murder".

What's so difficult?

Anonymous said...

What is so bizarre is that it is clear Walp, Doran and Chuck are after LANL. It is absolute total lunacy to think that the lab or UC had anything to due with the guys suicide.

Anonymous said...

Wall, Duran, Nanos, Montano, and their cronies will never contemplate, let alone realize, the damage they've done to this country for a few dishonest media sound bites.

Anonymous said...

All Montano is trying to do is drum up sales for his book. What better way than to tie book sales to embezzling government funds, murder. Throw in some sex and espionage and maybe they could make a movie...As it is, they lack evidence of any significant money being wasted. The only monies wasted were to pay the when they sued and settled out of court.

The only people who are afraid of a full investigation, are those who have something to hide, hey lets find out what really happened, whats wrong with that? Only then can we let that era to pass without any lingering questions. Those in the know, know that there is much more to the story than the simplistic rhetorical comments above. I was there! I was serving on EAC "Employee Advisory Council" at that time, there is a big story here, why so much fear?

A very poor position from which to see what "really happened." Some of us interacted with the principals on an almost-daily basis. There is no fear, just weariness and disgust for Walp, Duran, and Montano for still trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. I guess they think enough time has passed that their lies and misdeeds will not be recognized or remembered.

No one is afraid, I say bring it on since it would just make these clowns look bad again. I really doubt there will be one though.
