It's always somebody from LANL.

So who in this persons management chain and with in his co-workers thought this was a good idea without checking with TSA first prior to travel? And he wouldn't be challenged entering the Forestall Building or other DOE facility with out proper authorization? And 9/11 to boot. To quote Wayne's World "Hello?"

The cowboy culture of arrogance.

It is always entertaining to see another new story about a typical LANL staff member.
Some things just never change.

8:24 AM must not have ever traveled with a scientific demonstration item. There are well understood policies for such travel and all scientists should be aware of the policies.

Except, of course those policies don't apply to LANL scientists, who know more about the topic than anyone else. If you don't believe this, just ask them.

It is time to get over it, you can't win this, you will spend the rest of your worthless life hating LANL, but long after you are dead and gone LANL will still be around, you know this to be true. It is truly sad to watch your downward spiral but perhaps it is inevitable.

On the contrary my friend, on the contrary, my hate for LANL is the only thing that sustains me, it is the only reason I have to live for, every day is a new day to hate something at LANL, and without LANL I would have nothing... nothing. I am the Satan to LANL God, God can exist without the Devil but there can be no Devil without God thus I need LANL even though LANL does not need me. I know it sounds strange but hate will turn you utterly insane and irrational over time and it is all I have going for me so I have no choice now but to continue my hate. In some ways I hope LANL will continue after I am gone so that my hate can live on after I am gone.

Sadly this episode is yet another manifestation of the underlying problems at LANL. Call it culture or something else, but the reality is that someone from LANL violates some rule or policy and then everyone at all Labs must suffer.

Everyone had added ethics training because of Beth Sellers, a LANL problem.

Now everyone is going to have added training on how to transit TSA with approved government demo articles for technical talks.

When will this madness end?

And what would those underlying problems be? The arrogant workforce or bad management?

Not sure that is is all one or the other. But it is not all LANS, since these type of events were rare in the first 5 years of LANS. The Quintana case was in that era, but there were not many. Alternatively, in the last 5 years, it seems that there is another one every few months.

I have to disagree with you on this, the first five years also saw a huge exodus of talent which correlates with a largee increase in administration. There was just a plot of this for the diversity seminar on at LANL focusing on women where it shows a drop in the fraction of technical staff with large increase in administration and so on, pretty damming stuff really.

It is difficult for the LANS hater to stay on topic in a thread.

I rent a home in Santa Fe to a post-doc and his wife who is an architect, both in their early 30's, and who have worked at LANL for just about a year. They recently gave me notice of their intent to vacate the rental due to new jobs in another state (not a national lab). I was curious about their rationale for their decision and they both indicated they were very disappointed by their LANL work experience. Neither one of them had any type of challenging work and felt smothered by the amount of regulations and training and LANL's lack of scientific mentoring and lack of professional development. They indicated that their managers appeared to just be there to mark their time. And they admitted they were a bit idealistic about their expectations, which is natural based on their age, but felt the last year was a waste of time professionally. They enjoyed the cultural experience of being in northern NM but were also alarmed regarding the reports of the amount of legacy waste and were skeptical regarding the real quality of the drinking water, especially after how the amount of lead was not disclosed in Flint. BTW, they plan to stay positive during their exit interview if conducted and will not share their real thoughts. They don't feel an honest opinion will even matter.

I am not sure about you Mr 7:25 PM, something tells me your story is BS. Just a few issues, (1) one person is an architect? I did not know that we hired architects at the lab, (2) postdocs are for 2-3 years, you make it sound like they are leaving after only one year, possible but pretty rare. (3) "Smothered regulations and training and LANL", I have not heard to many postdocs complain that much about this, again possible but sees odd. (4) "LANL's lack of scientific mentoring" ok here is where my spidey senses really start to tingle, you see LANL and any other lab or University does not do scientific mentoring, that is done by the ..."mentor" or PI of the postodoc, it is of course possible that the mentor is doing a bad job but your wording of "LANL" lack of scientific mentoring just does not make any sense in how it is phrased. "They did not have any kind of challenging work" again this is just downright weird thing for a postdoc to say and goes counter to the point about lack of mentorship, since lack of mentorship tends to make things much more challenging when working in a scientific laboratory. Perhaps you are simply unfamiliar about what a postdoc is, what academics do, LANL or science in gernal which is fine but that brings up (5) If you are not associated with LANL and your are not a scientist than why are you reading and posting on this blog? Possible but again odd unless you have some other agenda that you are not stating. (7) "Lack of professional development." I am not sure what you mean by this but again it is not something I have ever heard postdoc mention. (8) "They indicated that their managers appeared to just be there to mark their time." Again this is rather odd as postdocs have little to no interact with managers, (one of the advantages of being a postdoc), they will interact with the technical staff or their mentors but not management. (8) "but were also alarmed regarding the reports of the amount of legacy waste and were skeptical regarding the real quality of the drinking water, especially after how the amount of lead was not disclosed in Flint." Possible but a bit odd, so in one year they are suddenly worried about legacy waste? This whole last statement sees just a little too off for me. (9) " exit interview if conducted and will not share their real thoughts." Well that sure is convenient is it not.

Ok I am not sure what your agenda is 7:25pm with this crock and bull story but you are not fooling anyone.

Likely true 7:25pm. The amount of regulations is smothering but it is bore from bad behavior across the complex (not just LANL) and band aids vs true accountability for that behavior. This is the government way. Root cause equals we just prevent bad human behavior from ever happening again. You can't. Instead a bunch of dumb regulations. Thanks NNSA.

The story sounds like bs here is why. (1) Postdocs last 2-3 years, and these people are leaving after 1, sees odd. (2) LANL does not hire architects. (3)"did not have challenging work" This is a very odd thing for a postdoc to say. (4) " felt smothered by the amount of regulations and training" possible however postdocs generally do complain about this so much and have less training than staff. (5)" LANL's lack of scientific mentoring and lack" ok this is the big giveaway that this is bs, LANL, any other lab or a University does not "mentor" postdocs, that is done by the "mentor" or PI. The wording makes no sense and shows a lack of understanding of what a postdoc does. (6) "They indicated that their managers appeared to just be there to mark their time." Postdocs have almost no interact with managers, they interact with the PI, mentors or other postdocs but very little with managers. (7)
"also alarmed regarding the reports of the amount of legacy waste and were skeptical regarding the real quality of the drinking water, especially after how the amount of lead was not disclosed in Flint" This just seems completely off to me and sounds like some personal issue of the poster (8) "will not share their real thoughts. They don't feel an honest opinion will even matter." Well that sure is convenient

Your whole story is made up and does not hole up compared to almost every other experience of postdoc at LANL, most of which would like the option to stay on LANL.
The better question is why do you make up lies in you never ending attacks on LANL?
