A couple of points.
(1) I really doubt Goldstein is actually a out and out SJW. As I said anyone who grew up in NYC in the 60s, and 70s, is not an sjw. Sure they may be liberal but they play SJW card as more as protection. Remember liberals and the far left are not the same, in many ways they are opposites. Far right people have much more in common with the far left. This is rule I have yet to see violated. You may need to get a few drinks into these people before the truth comes out.
(2) Before you celebrate, all this could be reversed next year. If Biden/Harris wins, one of their issues could be "To combat systemic, systems of institutionalized structural oppression" we will now made mandatory month long bias training camps for all federal employees, and we will no longer do business with any agency that does also implement a similar protocol. We will also have mandatory tests, motivations, and incentives.
(3) In fact Trumps order may make thing much worse since the new administration may score some easy points by saying "We are reversing specific Trumps policies" and doubling down on how much of it we need.
(4) I suggest you start reading some books by Kafka to prepare you for what is coming. History does not repeat itself but it does rhyme. There has been many times that human freedom and liberty have been stamped out and we could be at the start of such an age. Sure you can get rid of the police but nature abhors a vacuum, at it will be replaced, not pretty but this is how it works.

JIM CROW ‘GORILLA’ VIDEO USED IN TRAINING AT
LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY
Attorney Tony Bothwell of San Francisco today said Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory should stop using a training video that features Jim Crow “gorilla” imagery. He called the video “hurtful to African Americans and offensive to anyone who has any sensitivity to the problem of racism in America.”
In the video, six white adults are shown tossing two basketballs back and forth. Half way through the short video, an adult dressed in full-body black gorilla costume, having thick black lips, walks into the middle of the group of whites, stops to face the camera and pound on the chest, then turns and walks off camera.
“The words ‘gorilla,’ ‘monkey,’ and ‘ape’ – and images of these animals – have been used commonly throughout American history to demean people of African heritage from the time of Kunta Kinte to Frederick Douglass to Michelle Obama,” Bothwell said.
The video used in the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons laboratory within the past year was produced in 2010 by Daniel Simons, a University of Illinois psychology professor. Simons and Christopher Chabris, associate professor of psychology at Union College, had produced a similar video in 1999. In the earlier version, the black “gorilla,” having thick white lips, “acts and looks like a blackface performer as the buffoonish character known as 'Jim Crow' in the 1830s minstrel show that has entertained white racists ever since,” Bothwell said.
“In the version of the video shown to Livermore lab supervisors, the Jim Crow character performs, the difference being that the thick white lips have been painted black.”
Bothwell said that a white Lawrence Livermore instructor who showed the video to dozens of supervisors told the class that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is “H.R. mumbo jumbo.”
The video has been used to determine how many employees counting the number of basketball throws fail to notice the “gorilla.” Bothwell commented, “Dozens of whites including the instructor should have been sensitive to the humiliating impact of the gorilla video on African Americans exposed to it.”
Bothwell asked, “What if the situation were reversed? What if you were one of a few whites in a class with dozens of Black employees, when a Black instructor shows a video in which six Black adults are tossing a basketball, an adult dressed in a full-body white albino gorilla costume with thin pink lips walks into the middle of the group of Blacks, stops to face the camera and pound on the chest, then turns and walks off camera? How would you feel?
“The pain suffered by African Americans when demeaning incidents occur is all the deeper because events ranging from racist rants by politicians, to deadly ‘black while driving’ traffic stops, to supremacist violence – happen too often. Every single demeaning incident pours salt into the wound.”

No we need worry about gorrillas and counting basketballs. Everything I have ever read from Bothewell is just nuts. He also just wrote that we must hire African American to head LLNL.
Can we just write off Bothewell as nut job and move on to doing the best job for Nuclear weapons and stockpile stewardship.
There is something going on at LANL as well. This week there was going to be a colloquium on unconscious bias but it was cancelled the day before it was to be given. The rumor was this was due to a DOE directive. The talk was to be given by a guy named Bacino. Since unconscious bias is supposed to be based social science studies one would figure that Bacino should have some kind of social science or technical background that would allow him to understand and convey the rigorous statistical and scientific methodology used to justify unconscious bias as scientific concept. This is on top of understanding the other literature in the field that has discussed the issues with this kind of research with reproducibility, lack of reliable statistics, misuse of statistics such as P-hacking and data dreading, and lack of any consensus.

The NNSA, DOE or some other Federal agency needs to look into this at the NNSA labs. I personally believe that pushing critical race theory and uncurious bias concepts could be seriously damaging to our labs in terms, of retention, capabilities, moral, and the overall quality in terms of what we accept as scientifically rigorous or good research.

Respectfully, did you ever notice Director Goldstein's eyes get real big whenever he talked about a Trump policy whether the Travel Ban with Countries that had broken Airport vetting or recently with the ban on H1B1's. Easy to see he hated Trump.

Is this "formal direction" notice to LLNS management available, and is it the direct result of the gorilla costume seen in a training video used at LLNL? Did a white LLNS instructor tell his class the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is "H.R. mumbo jumbo"?
Having seen one version of the basketball counting video, and talked to many others who have also seen it. Everyone I have talked to thought it an excellent illustration of the point it was making about situational awareness. I have never heard a comment about race associated with that video, nor did I think of it as such until you posted the Bothewell stuff. Thanks for throwing gasoline on the fire!
Decades or centuries from now they will look back on these times and the things that happened the same way we look back on witch-trials/witch-burning, alchemy, monarchs/royalty "ordained" by god, etc, and shake their heads and ask "WTF were they thinking?"
In my opinion the Directive is strictly because of CRT classes that were complained about at Sandia and nothing to do with Gorilla video although that should be looked at also. At our national Labs liberals tried a power grab with fake inclusion and now are all retiring as they got caught politicizing Sandia, LANL and LLNL. Goldstein is getting out of town as a guess he was toast. He is a disgrace. how can someone so smart be so gullible or be so politically biased at his position. His retirement is a win/win for LLNL you understand.

I saw or heard all of the above and not in one instance did I ever relate an African American or ANY person/race/creed/color to the characters or lyrics. Perhaps I am insensitive. Maybe that's the other side of the hyper-sensitive coin.

A couple of problems with that, (1) Jim Crow ended 60 years ago there are not even that many people around who lived in that time. (2) You are assuming that someone is not intelligence enough to understand what the training video means or is about. That last point seems kind of insulting to African Americans. You have to read into something that is simply not there. (3) This is only speculation but I doubt anyone ever complained about this video and Bothwell is simply looking for anything he can to boast his power to take advantage of the current climate. In other words I simply do not trust Bothwell's intentions and he always cam across as grifter to me.

There is no evidence that anyone ever found the video offensive. I doubt anyone ever complained about and I doubt you could even find someone who finds it offensive.

I would feel the same as everyone else, nothing. The fact is no one was offended by the original video and no one would be offended by the version Bothwell proposes.
The whole thing is a con by Bothwell. He has no interests in racial relations, no interests in bettering humanity, or helping people out. He is grifter using whatever means to get ahead that is what he does. If there was something horribly racists that he could push to help his agenda he would push that.
I have been to at a couple of these training. I challenged the instructor at first they said that "studies" show but when I countered that these studies are very problematic and not conclusive they completely backed off. They seemed a bit rattled after that. Almost everyone wanted it to be over, and there was no useful information in it at al. Afterword several people said how ridicules the whole thing was or that they even found it offensive.
Did LANL, Sandia, and other labs in the Complex also receive the same 9-9-20 DOE directive that LLNL did, or not?

From management. This is a blog not an academic study. Besides it does not take much brains to figure out that LANL and LLNL also got the order. For example last weeks talk on unconscious bias at LANL was "suddenly" canceled.

I was sitting near my terminal, listening to a webex meeting. The squeals from the "woke" damaged an eardrum. Perhaps I can be compensated for the damage. Compensation is consistent with "woke" goals.
