 MIT Professor Arrested and Charged with Grant Fraud for Failing to Disclose Work For Chinese Government

There has been a series of arrest of US scientists working with the Chinese including people at LANL. This is just the latest one. Of course one could ask if this is going to end with the new administration.

I don’t know how or if this changes with the Biden administration. It’s become a law enforcement issue. We’ve brought a lot of Chinese over here and put them in important positions in academia. We have 400,000 Chinese studying in the United States. We give security clearances to former citizens of the PRC and Taiwan. We support Chinese industries as we de-industrialize our own. I believe we have an implicit policy to benefit China, a product of the Cold War where we wanted to leverage China against the Soviet Union.

I think it will still be considered illegal but the administration could say this is not a priority so if there where a bunch of people working on this in the FBI and they could simply start working on something else like domestic terror, human trafficking act. Trump had a real problem with China and all these arrest came under his watch so there may have been implicit push for this. Of course I have no real knowledge how they decide what areas and the Biden administration may be told by the agencies that this is a threat area. I also think the high tech industry is getting tired of having intellectual property stolen and will keep pressuring the government to do something about this.

I am no fan of the Sir farts-a-lot either but he did not know the person was a spy. I am not even sure he was briefed on possible threats so I would not blame him. Sure you can make fun of him and I feel kind of bad for the spy but he is getting to much flack for this.

I looked at Charles Leibers group at Harvard, he was arrested a year or two ago. If you look at former group membershttp://cml.harvard.edu/people/former-group-members

I think there could be pattern but I am not sure.

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.
