LANL contract up for bid!

Senators Confirm LANL Contract Will Go Up For Bid, New Mexican, December 19, 2015

Members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation confirmed Saturday that the private consortium that operates Los Alamos National Laboratory will not have its contract renewed after it expires on Sept. 30, 2017.

The New Mexican reported in a story published Saturday that the National Nuclear Safety Administration, the arm of the Department of Energy that oversees the lab’s contract, has decided to put the contract worth about $2.2 billion annually up for competitive bidding. The decision follows a series of federal investigations and performance evaluations involving the lab’s safety record before and after a drum from the lab burst and leaked radiation at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in February 2014 near Carlsbad, shutting down the nation’s only underground nuclear repository indefinitely.

If LANS gets a single cent during the "extension" for NNSA convenience following the contract expiration in 2017 then Congress should launch a full-scale investigation.

Thank God the "evil" regime is finally coming to an end at LANL. There have been some very hateful (and I mean HATEFUL) managers leading LANS during the last 8-years. Most of them came from Livermore and Savannah River. You know who they are or were.

The key is to change the management culture. Since LANS came in, management is all about enriching itself at the expense of the organization by getting as much money as possible for doing as little work as possible. Do not interact with the staff, do look at real problems, never stand up for the right thing, be yes men, never ever question, despise excellence by claiming that quality is only perception. These are now the management mantras that are justified by saying we are corporate now. Since LANL is so isolated there are no checks in balances in the short term for such a broken system, but that does not mean there are checks and blanches in the long term as we have now seen. Change the management culture and the labs can thrive.

That is exactly what happened from 2004 and onward. LANS has stripped the labs of any talent, knowledge and science. It is now about big money without doing anything, the problem is that people with real talent are a problem with that so that is why LANS made LANL a very uncomfortable place for people with talent, integrity, and knowledge and that is why so many have left.

Like in 2007, this is really going to hurt employees and long-term weapons science. DOE has no idea how to improve things. Their best idea failed and there is no plan B.

Incompetent procurement officials wrote a terrible contact with the wrongbincentives, too much oversight, and zero flexibility. A contact to hamstring cowboys notconduct complex science in a fractious culture. Poor contact = poor outcomes.

A DOE failure.thtsgoing to cost many innocents their jobs and many more tens of thousands.

Hugh McGovern comes to mind. Failed at RLW FoD, failed as WETF FoD, failed at Weapon Facilities as FOD. Then becomes the current Operations Manager at RULOB and RLW. Vicious and hateful "person". He threatened to kill his employees at WETF. This is what is wrong at LANS and continued to be wrong.

How many will employees will get their pink slip, because of the incompetence of LANS?

The gross incompetence of the LANL TA55 management is exceptional even by LANL standards. Jeff Yarbrough is a simpleton who is in way over his head and his mean and ruthless sidekick Tim George are deplorabe managers. The morale at TA55 is rock bottom. Their choice in division management is a complete joke. They run for over 30 months basically a paused facility at a cost of over a million per calendar day. I hate them and cannot wait for them to be relieved of duty!

Bob Mason came to work (TA-55 FoD) drunk one morning and failed his urine test. Raises the questions how may months or years he was coming to work drunk. Really, a drunk FoD of our nation's only plutonium faciliity? Heck of job LANS, heck of a job!

Charlie is a looser that does not have the guts to resign. He is like Marty McFly's dad in Back to the Future, spineless to the NNSA bullies. He aids and abets the contractors, giving them, in cahoots with NNSA, "Key Personnel" status so the they get a cush retirement at LANL employees expense, regardless of their performance (i.e Jeff Yarborough). That's right Jeffy was handed a golden parachute, receiving "Key Personnel" status from NNSA and Charlie cooperates by having the employees pay more into the retirement system to cover it! Charlie never mentions this sort of stuff… he is such a great guy! Jeffy took hundreds of employees days off away from them to improve performance… but they don't know how Charlie and the NNSA helped take money away from them in addition to their days off. If they did, NO ONE would support them (by the way they are still paying for Jeff and many others).

C'mon Charlie, your resignation is overdue.

An obvious one is Beth Sellers, remembers our deputy director with some ethical lapses. She by the way is why we have to take ethics training now. Charlie knew exactly what was going in but kept silence, he picked her and was going to stand by her to end. Absolutely a disgrace, and the real kicker is that Beth than went to work for Bechtel even though she is now barred from working with the Federal government for years. This whole thing shows just how incredibly corrupt thing have become.

No worries, he's like Otis Cambell (ala Andy Griffith), Mason just locks himself up in a jail cell at PF-4 every day he goes to work in this condition. America can feel safe again.

Savannah River Site (SRS) brought the likes of Bob Mason (PF-4 FoD), Hugh McGovern (former WETF and WFO FoD), Kathy Johns-Hughes (former Transuranic Program), etc. all failures in their own right!
