Hey SSVPers!
Has anyone applied for Unemployment? What happened?

Did the Lab promise to NOT contest unemployment benefit when the SSVPers apply for unemployment insurance?

Did the Lab promise to NOT contest unemployment benefit ...

Art Wong made a statement to that effect during the Director's All-Hands.

Given the amount of gray hair I saw in the checkout area, I would believe that a majority of the SSVPers were like me, retiring. As far as I know, if you're drawing a retirement check you don't qualify for unemployment.

C'mon Labbies, don't rape the system...you're already making out like bandits. If Art wants to promote illegal money grabbing, that's his problem.

You ole farts are so lucky. Tough times ahead for the rest of us sorry bastards who have a long way from retirement.

In six months when my departing check runs out I'll apply but until then I think all the SSVSP'er are SOL. The ISP'er won't have this problem. They will be told when to leave and how fast maybe even with an armed escort.

If you retire voluntary, how can you expect the state pays you unemployment compensation? Unemployment check is only paid out to the laid off employees. Anyone who thinks they can file unemployment application and lie on the application as to the nature of their leaving the lab , essentially commit fraud. California or any other state won't pay you. Especially in California, the employees taking the retirement paid out are on the major news channels as well as on many newspapers. Do you think the folks at the unemployment office read the news at all?

I think we'll try in 6 months and get it. Maybe sooner without lying.

correction to June 19, 2013 at 9:59 PM: If you are drawing a retirement check, you CAN qualify for unemployment. Of course you have to be actively looking for a job, etc. And PART of the retirement check has to be your own money coming back to you. It doesn't matter of it's $1.59 out of a $2K check, but SOMETHING has to be a return of money you had previously contributed to your retirement fund.

How do I know? I was unemployed four years ago, explained the situation to an EDD employee, and collected both retirement and unemployment until I found a job. I would have lost my house otherwise, BTW.

If you voluntarily left the Lab, you should not even think about applying for unemployment. Art Wong wasn't very smart saying they won't contest it. This will cost the Lab lots of money thereby remaining with budget issues. It would be stupid for HR not to contest the unemployment claims. But then, HR has never been very smart.

I took the SSVSP and after reading some of the nasty comments out here about how SSVSP weren't going to get unemployment and yey you VSP which by the way is coming are going to get unemployment I filled out the on-line application and answered all the questions about $$ you got for leaving $$ you got for vacation $$ you get for a pension just to see if I was going to be considered. Got my notice in the mail yesterday telling me to put my resume on line and register. Next will come a phone interview. I keep you informed as time goes on.

Did phone interview today so we'll know in 10 days if I get unemployment.
