A gain of almost 0.008! Call the academy in Stockholm!

The real "gain" of NIF is LLNL's contribution to our knowledge. That's what what makes NIF such a success story (#1 LLNL accomplishment). That's how LLNL contributes to our country. NIF is now the crown jewel of American Science. Good Job LLNL!

NIF may be #1 at LLNL but it wasn't even mentioned in the NNSA list of 2013 accomplishments.

For the Jan 6 8:07 poster who stated that LLNL was not mentioned in the 2013 list from NNSA I suggest reading/computer glasses:

http://nnsa.energy.gov/mediaroom/pressreleases/2013accomplishments

The 3rd bullet lists the artificial retina.
If you click on the link in the 4th bullet you'll see the 2013 R&D awards where LLNL is listed.

Now none of that fixes the NIF 14 kjoule "grand" accomplishment, but LLNL still continues to provide interesting and useful discoveries and technologies despite the albatross of NIF.

Sorry, I meant to type NIF, but my mind has been so brainwashed to identify NIF with LLNL, my fingers typed LLNL without me noticing.

Indeed, artificial sight is a most worthy goal -- good luck springing bucks to pursue it from that big dude down the road.

Actually, you don't need to apologize. January 7, 2014 at 11:32 AM needs to put on his own reading glasses and re readthe post. Carefully, this time!

Well, one would certainly hope the folks at NIF could produce some worthwhile results with the $30M+ they got in Site Support (overhead) taxes they received in FY14.
