UC regents discuss the status of the Labs

For those who missed it, UC Regents meeting today to discuss the status of the Labs. Norm Pattiz indicated he was happy to get rid of the Environmental work at LANL, "no interesting science here" He doesn't know waste is accumulating at TA-55 and is directly tied to science. He said "UC took a punch in the face" over the exploding drum at WIPP. No remorse or lessons-learned. Norm was wearing his 1000 caret diamond ring, Alexander Price suit, and drove off in his Austin Healy. The dwit nauseates me.

"UC 'running' LANL is what led to the current mess."

How? UC ran the labs just fine until 1999 with Wen Ho Lee, and even then UC was not to blame. The mess at the labs lies squarely at the greedy and corrupt politicians who where after money for the overlord corporations. In the long run this will destroy the labs and the country and it looks like we have we have the time limit for what is the long run. Hey look on the bright side a huge amount of money was made for certain people.

It is interesting, it appears that UC /LANS / LLNS wants to subcontract out the dirty work of cleanup. If the original poster is correct in saying that Patiz comments that this is not the "basic science" work that UC wants to do then how does one explain bringing in the partners Bechtel, Babcock/Wilcos, URS and Battelle. UC stated that they - UC - would be handling the "Science" and that the partners would be handling the other work, which should have included this dirty environment cleanup.

As usual, you bring in another scapegoat to take the hit. When DOE was being hammered over it's mismanagement of the national labs the NNSA is created. DOE passes the buck to NNSA which in turn passes it to the labs themselves. With UC creating the LLC it has the chance to pass the hot potato to its partners in crime and now with a subcontractor it's another layer of finger pointing.

It's good to be retired.

"When DOE was being hammered over it's mismanagement of the national labs "

And just way was DOE being hammered for the mismanagement of the labs? It seems like the labs ran fine before 1999. DOE was being hammered for mismanagement because it was convenient to get through the "for profit" model of corporations to run the labs and everything else in America. These corporations lobbied congress and they wanted something in return. This is the ultimate reason that the labs are in a mess now, it has nothing to do with UC, Wen Ho Lee, security, cowboy scientists or whatever. Even if there was never was a Wen Ho Lee, something else would have been blown out of proportion. It had to happen and and was going to happen. It was about how the United States has been sold out to corporations all in the name of money and that is all I have to say about that.

A UC-managed LANL would have done the same things, perhaps worse as Pattiz's comments above (if true) demonstrate. Their lack of oversight brought us Wen Ho, cowboys, Mustangs, classified-in-the-meth-lab, etc., and the "interesting science" comes with a lot of mundane repetetive boring overhead that must still be executed professionally. Their one saving grace was, it was never about fees for UC. Fees are turning all the labs and all the rest of the NNSA complex into purveyors of compliance and not much else, and THAT is costing the nation a lot more than it is now spending on LLC fees.

One might ask why Pattiz, Riley and the gang have anything whatsoever to do with scientific labs funded entirely at taxpayer expense.

Anonymous said...

When the talk regent....lies,lies, all lies!!! Then tie in the corporate weasels and you more lies! What did you expect with Rechtel??

False, utterly and completely and you dam well know it. Wen Ho Lee was never charged as a spy, there was never a Mustang, there where no cowboys, nor was there a meth lab. It was all made up, and if not these things than something else would have been made up to get in a for profit corporation. Here is a question, how is it that UC was fine for 50 years and in 1999 all hell broke loose? Maybe, just maybe similar minor things had been happening at all the labs all along but after 1999 the plan was to make money by privatizing the labs so everything had to be be blown out proportion and was. Also if LANL was the problem why would they also privatize LLNL, unless it was all about getting as much money out of running as many labs as possible. The whole thing of blaming UC makes no sense, never made sense and never will make sense. It is about money...get it money. No matter what the last 10 years has absoutly been a disaster for the labs in terms of being able to carry out the mission, now who is the blame for that? After the contract change, LLNL had a RIF, LANL had two VSPs outs, there has been an exit of a huge amount of talented staff, management has grown to crazy outrageous proportions, and there has been leadership screw up after screw up, moral is in the pits, and yet more than a billion dollars has been given away for profit without any added value, not even zero value, but negative value.

Not quite. Most of what he says is true, but he carefully avoids the facts on WHL. While it is true (although disingenuous) to say "Wen Ho Lee was never charged as a spy," he carefully does not say "Wen Ho Lee was not a spy," because all the evidence points to him having stolen design information which then disappeared. He WAS charged with mishandling classified information, and the evidence of that is indisputable. Computer forensics clearly traced his actions and none of them were consistent with an honest scientist carrying out his responsibilities. That the government lost its nerve when it became clear that to win the case SRD information would have had to be divulged in open court does not change the facts. If there is anyone out there still interested in actual facts, the Bellows Report is available although heavily redacted.

Not quiet. Qunitanna did take classified information out of LANL, and it was recovered in a meth bust in a local trailer park. Check the dates - this was after UC was replaced.

See above regarding Wen Ho.

There is indeed a cowboy culture at LANL, as has been observed by many people: For example, http://articles.latimes.com/2004/jul/25/nation/na-lab25, http://www.npr.org/healthscience/documents/holian_alamos.pdf, http://nukewatch.org/media2/postData.php?id=904, and many others. At the very least, most outside LANL and many inside perceive it.

"There was no Mustang". Pete Nanos.

There was classified in a meth dealer's trailer home, http://www.foxnews.com/story/2006/10/25/classified-los-alamos-documents-found-in-meth-bust.html It may not have been a chemical meth lab, but why is the distinction important?

I too saw the video of Pattiz, he comes off very arrogant, very self aggrandizing. The rest of the Regents (including Neapolitano) appear lost and window dressing (literally with Pattiz) like while Pattiz is "reeling off" smart ass remarks. Unfortunately, sadly, I have no confidence in the University of California any longer, they (Pattiz) only represent the interests of Bechtel in every dumb decision. UC was once a great institution.

Wen Ho Lee, was never charged as a spy, and we must presume he innocent until proven guilty. Even the judge had to apologize to him.

>That the government lost its nerve when it became clear that to win the case SRD >information would have had to be divulged in open court does not change the facts.

This is BS, they have charged and persecuted plenty of other suspects before despite
sensitive information. Maybe they just did not have a case and they knew it. You simply do not know. One thing we know was there there was clear government misconduct in the case. There are plenty of other sources for you to read as well.

Are you really that stupid? Why do you insist on being militantly ignorant?

The Brad Holian document provides statistical data to show that there was no
"cowboy culture". Do you read the the things you post? In comparison to other labs in the DOE, and NNSA complex it is clear that there is no cowboy culture and never was a cowboy culture. No in LANL ever said there is a cowboy culture and the ones outside of the labs who said this where saying it for political reasons and did even believe it themselves.

>"There was no Mustang". Pete Nanos.

Uh, what on earth. It does not matter if Nanos said this or not, there was no Mustang. After a through investigation the total of "questionable or inappropriate"
transitions as less than 15K out of a budget of 2.3 billion dollars which is far bellow any comparable organization. The culture of theft never existed.

This was after the contract change, there was now meth lab. The value of the information was also of very low quality.

LANL should have been shut down years ago. There's absolutely nothing they do that can't be done better by LLNL and SNL, without the repeated public fiascos. Two weapons labs is an anachronism, so you get rid of the one that most deserves to go belly-up, and that is LANL.

False, as pointed out the public fiascoes never existed they where made public so
that LLNL and LANL would be privatized. There are also many things that are done at LANL that cannot be done at either Sandia for LLNL. In any case even if they
moved part of the lab many of the employees at LANL that you hate so much would simply move to these new labs and continue to live well. Even if LANL where ever shut down you would still be a bitter pathetic loser who got fired due to incompetence and are permanently unemployable. Did that about cover it?

I certainly hope you don't work at LANL or LLNL. One would hope those employees at least know and respect the difference between a fact and an opinion. Claiming your opinions are facts is not the most effective way to establish or maintain credibility. If you care.

The only cowboy was Nanos. Heck, he even came to a meeting wearing a cowboy hat! If Security had listened to those involved with the two "missing disks" they would have realized they NEVER existed. Nanos was looking for someone to squash with his pointed cowboy boots and he did a bang up job. Several people were fired (two that falsified inventory report of classified, which I feel is justified) and one scientist (unjustified). Shortly after that the scientist died - the day they said it was all a mistake.

WHL was guilty; him writing his book doesn't mean anything. The judge that apologized shouldn't have. Bad judgement, if you ask me.

There was also no Mustang. Maybe except the horse that Nanos came to town on. Rode it till it died and got a cushy deal going to Washington and staying on the Laboratory payroll for a while.

The Quintana incident is true. A drug bust at her home discovered the classified documents.

Don't believe everything that is printed in newspapers or on the News. Just saying.

The labs will be criticizedbecause there are lab haters. Traitors who put failure of the stockpile as job 1. Onlt affirmative action faggot twats would getbabfree pass because they would not be measured at all. But UC can not find sufficient competent others to don that particular immunity cloak. Instead, they live in the slinging shit, accomplishments lots, failing sometimes snd leaf at the top of UC byba real prick.

September 24, 2015 at 8:12 PM

No, it is a cultural phrase that has come to mean that the speaker realizes he has offended the listener but wants the listener to know that he doesn't want any consequences for his offense, because it was just a random comment he hoped would not engender any bad feelings or consequences. The ultimate "let me get away with this because I know it was offensive but I hope you don't care."

Anonymous said...

Actually, September 24, 2015 at 9:03 PM that's not what I meant in my September 21, 2015 at 11:31 AM comment. I knew exactly what I was saying as fact and not a random comment. I failed to look up the "definition" in the urban dictionary prior to usage. Although I must admit that I didn't care if people thought it offensive. Fact is fact. I know. I was there..... And no, I wasn't involved directly, I was only in the periphery.

As stated by Anonymous September 21, 2015 at 10:03 PM comment; people may never hear the evidence and FACTS regarding WHL (see below).

The basis is something you will have to wait for, maybe for a very long time, until declassification of the details of the investigation.

" And no, I wasn't involved directly, I was only in the periphery. "

Even if you where only on the periphery of those or any other event is does not mean you have any real understating of what actually occurs, the process, or the true nature of the results. It is possible that you are not intelligent enough to understand or interpret correctly what happened or you had some other kind of mental disability or deficiency that kept you form correct understanding of events around you. From some of your other posts it is safe to to assume that you have a rather distorted view of reality so you may not be the most reliable source for information of any kind. Just sayin...
