Nationwide impact on science collaboration caused by LANL screwups

Hearing many reports that scientists can not get their scientific samples sent from LANL for experiments at other locations due to the revoking of all shipping permits by the feds. If this is as widespread as it seems, the ramifications on many scientists will be large for the mistakes of LANL in sending the nuclear materials by airplane and not by truck last month to both Livermore and Savannah River.

One of the PADS was overheard today commenting that the Director was on his way out. If he does go soon, it should have little impact on the remaining operation of his followers that seem to be blind to gross incompetence.

I have also heard that Charlie is out but this only so LANS can save a bit of face and hope to get a bump in the bonus for the final year. Charlie was out by Sept 2018 anyway and must have made 10 million dollars in his time at LANL so he goes out laughing at us all. Even if he does go I am sure some deal will be made to make it well worth his effort. Make no mistake for the ADS and PADS this was always about money. They sacrificed everything for money, what they did not realize or perhaps they did but figured it was worth it , was that sacrificing everything is what in the end led to the loss of the contract. They lived by the mantra that the workforce did not matter, it may take a while but we have now learned that people do in fact matter. I would say it was a bitter lesson however the major players have made enough money that it was well worth it to sell out. In the end it has been rather profitable for Bechtel and other companies that essentially got free money and the politicians that have no doubt gotten some nice perks and donations from these companies.

I will ask this question again, can someone, anyone name a single benefit or value added to either LLNL or LANL by moving the labs over to an LLC model. I think a good case cane be made for a lot of harm but no benefit. The thing is that people like Charlie and many others knew this to be the case but supported this system anyway. I guess the money was too good.

LANS's costs were so high (GRT,management salaries, ERISA, etc.) that LANS had to cut staff shortly after taking ove. For a short while, until LANS hired a bunch of do-nothings, it was easier to find parking at TA-3. That was good while it lasted.

I can't think of one other good thing that LANS can take credit for. Not one.

Charle "GQ" McMillan's infamous legacy for the lab.... "Follow the money".
It's what he always did and look where it got him.
