Ah, yes. It's going to happen (again) this year.

Nothing like pulling the wool over the publics eye. I guess when you guys do this 10 time s second without the use of Pu, free of radiation so it will be a clean source as you sold this bill of goods, funding it will be okay. So far none of the promises are true.

It's PR, redefine the goal to make a news splash just before Ed is pushed out. And this target design will never, ever ignite, and they know it. Still, it can't hurt the funding prospects, which is the real point.

I love how miscreants on this blog feel qualified to state what will "never, ever" happen. That alone speaks volumes about your qualifications to make such statements.

I don't think they GAF since they know NIF's a joke and regret the government didn't spend the $7.5B on power plants that work. Hell even the new locks at the Panama canal are only going to cost $5B and they'll generate revenue for the world in excess of any $$ amount you could ever dream of short of the nation debt and our unfunded liabilities. Some want to put money into things that word while other just want to use the tax payer money to keep their jobs.

Yes NIF wasn't cheap. However, after Japan's Fukushima nuclear mess that continues to this day with radioactive materials pouring into the Pacific Ocean daily, the pursuit of controlled fusion has some merit. To put into perspective, the first Gulf war ran about 1 billion dollars per day yes?

Good try but that not good enough to justify $7.5B + and growing for nothing. Both wars were a waste but even the wars brought drones for many more reasons other than observations, better communications monitoring, smart weapons, and made us all aware our enemies live alongside us. I'm sad it didn't bring closure of all points of entry into the US and the purging of all the terrorist we have living here in the US by immediate deportation. I guess we'll never learn.

I do not dispute your points. In the long term it will be our 20 something's fighting for my old a _ _, in some energy related war, and this is a reason to vigorously pursue a path to energy independence. Perhaps the natural gas "fracking" technique will take us there at least as a bridge technology for the next 50-100 years.

This target isn't designed to ignite, so yes it will never, ever ignite. It was a flag-planting exercise, make some news even though it does not get you any closer to your goal with targets that have a chance of igniting.

Your wish is about to happen, the US will become energy independent in just a few years. Thanks to hydraulic fracturing technology, the US reserves have doubled in the past two years. No more reliance in the Middle East for oil. This frees up US global foreign policy to do good instead of bad things.

No show stoppers. We need natural gas options for new cars, natural gas conversion plans (where applicable) for our existing cars, large scale infrastructure upgrades for natural gas filling stations, and perhaps natural gas hardware to fill up at home.

If we had a coherent natural gas energy plan, the price of oil would drop. As long as we stumble without an energy strategic plan, OPEC laughs all the way to the bank.
