DoE wins the Golden Hammer Award

DoE wins the Golden Hammer Award For contractor expenses that were not in accord with policy, including large food and beverage bills, the award was given to DoE. It is shocking that such abuses can go on, and more shocking that they are reported to be wide spread. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/17/energy-department-pays-out-millions-for-contractor/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

Perhaps if this award wasn't from an ultra-conservative "moonie" publication it would have a degree of credibility. As it stands it's good that there's some oversite and that the DOE will address whatever problems they've found.

All they need to do is look at 111 and the cafeteria celebrations and they'll find plenty of waste.

The younger people at LLNL don't care if the Director's Office spent $100 too much on cheese. These younger people are watching their friends from grad school strike it rich in Silicon Valley while suffering through LLNL's endless instability, financial problems, and raises that are nonexistent or close to it. Despite that criticism, kudos to Parney and Tom for doing an OUTSTANDING job putting the employees first in 2013. Through crisis after crisis, Parney and Tom actually cared about the employees - this is something new at LLNL.

"In the past five years, the Energy Department has poured more than $1 billion into developing a hydrogen fuel cell. But the agency’s the inspector general warns that 10 percent of that total might have been wasted by contractors’ wining and dining."

Meanwhile, back at the declining DOE "for-profit" managed research labs you can't even find toilet paper in the restrooms on some days and pens & paper are rarely to be seen in the office stock rooms. Go figure.

Heck, at LANL even the cheap jugs of bottled water were disallowed several years ago and the water purifier filters were all ripped away from the drinking fountains. "Disallowed!" said the bureaucrats over at NNSA/DOE.

Sorry, but that's BS.

I don't take issue with the overall thread about waste. But there is no shortage of basic supplies at LANL or LLNL.

Let's keep it at least somewhat real.

Your Office Administrator is incompetent, or worse.

Medical insurance up. Raises poor. Furloughs. Layoffs. Loss of young staff. Terrible morale. Unneeded 7% salary reductions for an overfunded plan that NASA reneged on contributing to. Timing and Mumbai or dead Marilyn Monroe did better for us. OUR SO-CALLED LEADERS AREN'T. WE FOLLOW ZOMBIES.

LLNL no longer is the brand of excellence. It reports to fools.

If you read the list of failures in the previous post including the Chu/Obama wage freeze, you observe that neglect by Obama is the root cause. Pumbaa and Timon just followed the leader and yammered impotently thru the multiple crises while morale tanked. An effective leadership would have avoided the blunders.

And all of the leaders hate each other.

Nice to see Oblather fail. Whose scolded now, Mr. I have practical experience at nothing?

You picked another pension fund manager to rescue the worst but not the only- IT laydown in History.

Blundering is the price of incompetence, cause by aa or not.

Bodman was a financial manager. How did that work out?

How about a proven IT giant-scale project manager? Holder of the specification, the budget, the schedule, the contingency, the risk, assurances, customer and stakeholder communication and sponsor expectations.

A bull who makes decisions. What is Mara doing now? Or Van Arsdale?

Each more qualified than a pension fund manager.

I don't care. I'm a lion manager and you are all gazelles.... and I'm getting very hungry.

Watching the Obamacare debacle, it seems DOE IS one of the "best and britest."

Where's the "Golden Hammer" ??? We need to melt it down to make more holhraums !

Really, I've seen much less waste at LLNL in the last 15 years than my first 15 years.

Spending some bucks on Cheese and Crackers or Ice Cream is a good thing if it gets people out of their offices (and into the sunlight).

Please no! They might start thinking of interacting, and God forbid, procreating!

A little "fooling around" is not such a bad thing. Could brighten up your dull day, or NOT !
