The numbers look reasonable to maintain at that level. So just what non-essential function do the remainder of the staff perform?

What do the non-essential people do at a site's office - they put the red dye onto the tape.

They could close both site offices forever and the labs's productivity would improve.

Government workers don't have to work to get backpay, while LLNL employees will have to take vacation or no pay. Thanks, Congress

Don't thank Congress for this! Thank LANS/LLNS or better yet Ambassador Linton Brooks for dealing us this "bad hand".

If past shutdowns are any indication, the contractor will be paid retroactively. When LLNS does get paid, will that money be used to replace the vacation we were forced to take or will it simply be pocketed as a fortuitous windfall?

No one is "forced" to take vacation. If you can't live with a week or so without pay, you are a lousy manager of your life.
