Why is LANL closing?

Why is LANL closing? What happened to the $450 million in reserve that McMillan reportedly was crowing about recently? Appears to be that it suddenly went from ten weeks of available worker wages down to three. Where did the money go to?

No matter how much money they have left, NNSA has mandated that the labs will start min-safe operations on Oct. 21st and until the government passes a discretionary spending budget (or CR).

LANL (or LLNL and SNL) is not going to close! The Labs were merely bartering chips for Obama. What an absolute waste of money getting the Labs "spun up" to close. It was never going to happen in the first place!

Or, so Ted Cruz and the Teabag 5 were just blowing smoke the whole time? And I thought they were standing valiantly beside the American people.

"The Labs were merely bartering chips for Obama"?

I think you hold the labs in much higher esteem than the general public. I would wager that hearing about a couple of labs being shut down would be way down the priority list of the public. Just think of the hue and cry that was put forth over not paying for funerals and death benefits for slain servicemen. A lab shutdown would not have the same pathos and would be relegated to the B section of non-local papers.

The government is truly shutdown, I mean congress and the President aren't losing paychecks. Some are symbolically not tanking pay, but I'll bet you they get the back pay when all is said and done.

Washington is full of low life parasites and we voted them in.

"Blowing smoke" implies that the Tea Party people knew better but were conning everyone. That is giving them way too much credit. They thoroughly believed in the rightness of what they were doing, which makes it even scarier. These bozos are going to sink the Republican Party and probably the entire country along with it, if they have their way. They are the products of gerrymandered congressional districts throughout the country whose populations are just certifiably nuts. Yahoos and rednecks with no knowledge about the world but plenty of certainty about how right they are.

Signed, a moderate Republican.

And these bozos just cost the country %24B.

It is truly fortunate that Cruz, being foreign born, can never become President.

LANL, SNL had money to last for weeks. ORNL was prepared to stay open for several months. The embarassment of the Complex is LLNL, which has disappated a large reserve since the contract. Part of the plan was to build our WFO work. To that end they brought in Parney. He failed dismally to do that, so they made him director -- well, look at the competition. NNSA had to set a close date or LLNL would be totally embarassed and the NNSA LLC approach would be further exposed to the debacle it has always been. The state of the lab: no carryover for a rainy day, NIF fails to meet promises and is being slowly shut down, NWC is as planned on a decline, pension is underfunded, and the only new people we can get are post docs. Pretty sad situation. Don't worry though, management arrogance has not slipped a micron. We have an element named, win awards, and when things are tough we are told that we work for the nation, pride and patriotism. Money is secondary and the abuse is good for our souls. Good thing I am not a cynic.
