NNSA head warns of budget cuts

NNSA head warns of budget cuts
Sequestration is a discussion that many thought was over.
Dan Mayfield - Biz Journals
January 13, 2015

But Lt. Gen. Frank G. Klotz, USAF (retired), who is the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, said Tuesday it's a real possibility in 2016, and he's sounding the alarm. According to the Department of Defense, current law requires sequestration to resume in fiscal year 2016.

Klotz said the NNSA shares its budget with the Department of Defense. "If there are mandated reductions, that will affect us," Klotz told Business First. "We're watching that very carefully and arguing it's very important to maintain America's arsenal at the same time and reduce nuclear threats."

A champaign taste to "attract and retain the best and brightest" on a perpetually unstable beer budget.

All that man has created and all that man has discovered in the past 100 years guarantees a one way ticket to hell, may the Almighty have mercy on our souls.

So all the discoveries/creations before that (airplanes, automobiles, machine guns, poison gas, torture racks, etc.) are heaven-worthy?

Get ready for the next version of the "peace dividend" that hit DoD under Clinton. Now that the Administration has declared the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan complete, the budgets will take major cuts in the next two years.

Just words. Words don't make truth. The truth is that we will now be forced to fight radical Islam in our own country.

And that will help the DOE/DOD budgets how?

It will hurt, since we can't use DoD inside the country, and we also obviously can't use nukes inside the country. Thank Obama the conciliator for all that. We are screwed.

Obama can bring in James Taylor to serenade the radical Islamic terrorists.

Sequestration was a creation of the tea party wing of the House Republican part. So put down the Fox News cool-aid and stop blaming this President for defense cuts.

An example of Fox News lies...

There's a certain type of mentality for which the wolves must always be circling while the fires die and "oh my God, save the last bullet for yourself!" It's sad, pathetic and totally unworthy of the "home of the brave."

Ironic words to describe someone who is willing to fight on home soil for his life and freedom, but wishes he didn't have to. If the government would do its job, no one would have to.

So, can I look forward to a "retirement incentive" in FY2016 at LLNL?

Uh, no. Sequestration was the outcome of a high-level bipartisan commission from congress that was tasked to develop a mechanism to address the country's fiscal problems: unless congress and the administration agree otherwise, there will be tax increases and spending cuts (sequestration). The plan for sequestration was approved by a Republican house and a Democratic senate. It was approved by a Democratic president.

When it came time to implement sequestration, the country got many of the tax increases but sequestration and the spending cuts were kicked down the road. The country is about to reach that bipartisan-built section of road again.

Of course, the actual implementation of what was previously agreed is unlikely to be bipartisan. Because unlike successful businesses such as Foxnews (the most popular cable news channel because they found a niche market - half the population), the government has no fiscal discipline.

Uh, no. You're a paranoid freak show who doesn't have the slightest idea what he's talking about and is probably wetting his bed to visions of Rambo fantasies.

"And you're a clueless "progressive" who worships Obama."

Strike three. I'm a Republican vet.

I don't claim to know everything about radical Islam, but I know enough to understand that bed wetters like you, thrilling to these absurd fantasies, don't help anything. Ignorance and self important spite are of no value in situations with real peril. You have to see them for what they actually are. Hint: this one isn't the cartoon you seem to think.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It's still good advice after 2500 years.

Know this my friend, we are at war. We cannot afford to cave in to weaker wills, we cannot afford to give everything to everybody. In order to defend freedom we have to be willing to do what needs to be done and temporarily give up some freedom. We have to be alert and watchful at all times. The front has now moved to our homeland and anyone of us could be the enemy waiting to strike at anytime. This is the most dangerous period of time in our nations history. Are we going to be soft and let our civilization be destroyed just so we can say that we upheld peoples "rights", or are we going to stand firm a defend freedom?

Indeed closing Gitmo, pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan, not invading Syria, not invading Pakistan, standing by the French, no closing our borders tight, allowing gays in the military, and cutting military spending. All are signs of great weakness. 2016. Our economy has completely crumbled under Obama. Perhaps we can save something left of American in 2016.

There was a Pincus column a few days ago in the Washington Post about the ratio of defense spending on nuclear arms verses other items. The take away message is that nuclear budgets will be decreasing, it is just a question of how much.

If Klotz is right, then the smallest decrease could be 20%. If Pincus is right, the largest decrease could be 60%. These are projected decreases in the NNSA base weapons budget, and do not account for the funds required to reopen WIPP after the LANL debacle.

The path is ever downward. No important mission means less and less funding. Not saying that this is right, but how can you argue with the actions of the last few years?

Follow the politicians' actions, not their meaningless words. Nothing will change until or unless we hit a huge crisis that really shakes things up to the core. That doesn't look to be in the cards anytime soon. Until then it's a continuing game of pretend and extend.

Hey dipsh*t failure is no longer a word used in our current language. The proper use is "epic fail" not "epic failure". If you use "epic failure" you will sound like an out of date idiot who is trying to sound cool but is not. In your time that would be like someone saying "that is so low temperature"

Anonymous said...

Funny, no one has changed the dictionary.

Anonymous said...

The colloquial phrase is "Epic Fail".

Look it up in the Urban Dictionary and stop being such a total dweb, 9:26 (you can look that term up, too, if you like).

Anonymous said...

Actually, it's "dweeb." Terms adopted and promulgated by mindless, juvenile, inconsequential gamers (especially those who can't spell) are objects of amusement to the rest of the world.

It would be great if the research labs would take on energy, medicine, space, and any other area where mankind would benefit. Waiting until private industry thinks something will be cost effective is a disappointing way to further science.

Anonymous said...

The "research labs" do just that, including many at major universities and in industry. The Nuclear Weapon Complex labs have a different mission. If you undermine that, you run the risk of losing everything else.
