Atherton in, Moses out

NIF Reshuffle: Atherton In, Moses Out http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2013/04/new-director-and-mission-transition-at-nif.html I think some of you bloggers called this one (albeit for incorrect reasons). Doesn't look like a huge reshuffle anyways. Moses is still PAD for the directorate. Plus he's also been NIF director for SO LONG. April 29, 2013 at 5:52 PM Anonymous said... April 29, 2013 at 5:52 PM Isn't it amazing how in a time when all the worker bees are taking pay cuts, getting laid off and taking it in the shorts in almost anyway possible ULM finds a way to promote one of their own kind to a position giving due cause for a BIG pay raise and to get that salary up just prior to retirement. And they wonder why people hate them. April 29, 2013 at 7:09 PM Anonymous said... And they wonder why people hate them. April 29, 2013 at 7:09 PM Not everyone hates them. Hate is an emotion that negates thought and reason. If you hate, you lose. Try opposing your adversary with more intelligence and cleverness. April 29, 2013 at 9:42 PM Anonymous said... Just remember that Ed did his job well. He may not have the tact and social adeptness of a Fortune 500 executive. He may be a total a-hole to many but to others he was a effective leader. If the worst we can say about Ed is that he is unlikeable, that's a good sign that he is probably the guy you want to solve your very hard problems and run you high risk complex projects. I would say that in 100 years people will look at Ed on manner as Einstein, Dirac, and Teller. That is some legacy. You can also say what you want about NIF but NIF works. Is Parney going to announce a VSP on Thursday 5-2-2013 and is he going to let as many people who want to go leave by the end of June. That is what everyone I know wants the answwer to and they want it soon. I have never seen more excitement at LLNL than during this waiting period for those gates to open. I'm getting phone call after phone call asking the same question. April 30, 2013 at 11:39 AM Anonymous said... April 30, 2013 at 11:39 AM: Yes. No. Happy now? Ed would have gotten credit for ignition had his designers and scientists had not let him down. But now that he has been retasked, his legacy regarding the pursuit of ignition is final. He gets credit for a successful build and for playing his part (as with many others). But someone else will get all the glory whenever and wherever ignition-in-a-lab is achieved. " Teller does not belong in the same sentence as Einstein and Dirac. Ed Moses is just an engineer." First off, no Teller means no Livermore. Teller also made the "super". The super may have saved the United States. It is hard to compare Einstein, Dirac and Teller. They all had Noble prizes, and all had great scientific contributions. Teller went beyond science that he also had a great impact on politics and the Nation. Star Was which was Tellers dream is what brought down the Soviets. This man won the cold war. Yikes! Scooby, what were you thinking? Just leave the top post and delete all the crap, as is (was?) your policy.

Its payback for you morons not being able to read and follow simple instructions.

It's not payback if the morons' words are immortalized. It's fulfilling their wishes. Ignoring your own rules is a bad precedent, Scooby. Some of us depend on you enforcing them.

Who Cares? No one reads that crap anyhow.

I second that, no one reads this.

Yeah nobody read anything.

Did someone really defecate in the NIF elevator?

Old Johnny Boy used to go running around congress to argue that NNSA is stifling the labs by micromanaging. Going around the administrators to manipulate politicians with lies. He took the gamble and he and NIF lost. Now old Johnny boy needs to suffer the consequence. Hubris and arrogance completely unjustified. Most people get the success (here, ignition) first before spending their newly earned political capital. Doing it the other way is just con artistry.

Scooby,

I have a wonderful feeling if LLNS would just give it's employees a decent buy-out this blog and all the very unhappy people will disappear. The current bloggers here care but the young will never say a word in fear they may be caught and lose what they have, or know their time at LLNL is only until the economy recovers and they're moving on anyway so nothing matters. Either way the blog serves it purpose in many way exposing concerns and actually being very considerate of the bozo's who should have been raked over the coals in the major newspapers time after time but never were. It is a great place for the public to come and read just what goes on behind the fence lines and how their tax dollars are being spend. Personally I hope the blog stays forever and the young pick up where the old left off. between this blog and the youngs many social medias I'd say LLNS and LANS will continue to get very good coverage of the FACTS in real time. Thanks Scooby for all you have done and thanks to all the gate keepers before you at both LLNL and LANL.

Ditto. I strongly second 5:35 AM's comments, Scooby.

Thanks!

Considering the readership of this blog, I am starting to think that advertising might work. Government management consultants like Booz Allen Hamilton, Defense contractors like Northrop Grumman, Boeing, etc. Not the click-through advertising, but just for top-of-mind presence. Only downside is the somewhat crude language and subject matter and borderline defamatory statements covered in most threads.

Considering the readership of this blog, I am starting to think that most of the posts are now so stupid that it should be shut down.

Anonymous said...

But we use the blog to tell the media all about the problems you are having with NIF and giving them credible leads for their stories. and NIF gets extra publicity out of it.

Anonymous said...

There is ALOT more NIF news coming down the pipeline. Especially the part regarding stockpile stewardship science. NIF scienticians and their analyses of raw data are under scrutiny. You have to wonder sometimes how 16 years can pass and they still can't do the analysis right. They must literally get their group leaders from the bottom of the barrel. Like the ones who have no experimental research experience put in charge of experimental measurements. The meetings must be an echo chamber brimming with group think and confirmation bias.

Anonymous said...

What the hell is "Stockpile Stewardship Science"? That's not a major offered at MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Princeton, Harvard or anywhere else for that matter.

Why don't they just call it "Dusty Old Bomb Maintenance"? That would be much more descriptive.

Your stupidity is only matched by your ignorance.

Lets see: shock physics, plasma physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, actinide science, high explosives research, materials science, just to name a few.

Who is writing the ignorant posts? The janitor? Or maybe Ms. Anti-Science who heads security?

Anonymous said...

The post from May 5, 2013 at 1:09 AM is what we call a "checkmate"

Anonymous said...

The ignorant poster's scope and understanding of the universe of science is limited to the potato electrode experiment and the lemon secret writing experiment. Anything beyond that is just jibber jabber nonsense that isn't taught at Harvard, MIT, caltech, Princeton, etc.

Anonymous said...

You need to stfu. There are unknown unknowns that need to be investigated regarding he potato electrode because it can lead to limitless energy for humankind. And the ship has been built and is ready to sail. Investigations have commenced and discoveries are ready to be made. Who knows how many Nobel prizes may come out of the potato electrode. We must explore this realm. Many generations of future potato electrode scientists will be trained from out current work. Explore the realm! What mysteries will be revealed by the mysterious potato?

Anonymous said...

I think you are right, May 6, 2013 at 1:29 AM. If Moses could bring in $6B to fund the potato electrode, our energy problems would be solved. And in the worst case, it would keep all those nuclear physicists off the street.

I tried nuking a potato once. It cam out ok, just not the crispy skin I like.

The potato electrode was BUILT and it WORKS. A true accomplishment for the ages
